What was wrong with the old Union South?

Isn't this across the road from the Union South Demolition/Construction video also a time lapse??

Haven't been to the "new" Union South. But when I went to UW in the 80's, I often remarked what a depressing, lifeless building this was. I think I can count the number of times on one hand when I by choice went to do anything there. Just about anything would be better!
