Knowledge : Spanish, Portuguese, English, Dutch and Japanese B2-C1, and Russian and Mandarin at +/- B1. The thing is that I'm from Luxembourg where 47% are foreigners who do not speak Luxembourgish and I grew up in a multilingual environment. Actually, you can say that I have 3 native languages (Luxembourgish, German, and French) and therefore for me it's easier to learn other languages than for example someone who only grew up in a monolingual environment :)

That might not be memorisation, but it certainly is translation. What about all the false cognates? 'Actual' por exemplo? Better to learn all vocabulary in context via listening! Marc, how much listening to English have you really done or do? Most students skip listening or use subtitles, which IS skipping listening. Te deseo mucho éxito con tu canal y que no lo abandones (exit).
@Marc_1902
@Marc_1902 Ай бұрын
Hello, when I was learning English, I did not use any subtitles at all. I just tried to pick up as many words as possible by only listening. Generally speaking, when I wanna learn a new language, I never use subtitles because, as you said, it is like skipping listening. The best way to identify "false cognates" is by speaking to native speakers and also making a lot of errors. In my case, I often used these cognates, and sometimes there were some false friends. Of course it was embarrassing, but for the next time I remembered my mistakes :)

Hey, nice video, I hope you get more traction as a language youtuber, if that's your aim. just want to know if you have any other tips. I've been reading and it seems like everytime I practice now I'm improving a little bit. One thing I wonder is if you read aloud or to yourself. I've been trying both and see benefits from each way, but I'd like to know more about how you trained yourself. Was it all reading and listening and it just started to click, or did you rehearse phrases over and over, or what?
@Marc_1902

Mainly reading and listening (input). I personally do not often read a loud. I've never rehearsed phrases over and over, because it didn't really work for me.

Just thought I would give you an update since you're such a small channel. I got my book and have been reading as my primary practice. It is probably the best method I've seen so far to simply get more comfortable with the sounds and tempo of Japanese. I've been listening a lot more and realize now that it is really learning a new language, and not about trying to convert Japanese on the fly. Or rather, it is trying to hear and understand how Japanese convey information in their language and copying it. I should have realized this earlier, since you see this a lot in translators. You might try to say some really simple thing, but over and over the meaning is changed to something very different when you translate it. So, just thought I'd say thanks, because it was very good advice.

@@Marc_1902Well... actually some points are the same/similar with you and some points are the opposite of you. For example, i didn't acquire... but i really "learned" the languages, i learned grammars and memorized vocabularies, it worked well for me and i was enjoying the proccese :) But i also think that input/listening is very importante when start to learn a new language, and i also think that italki is better than tandem although i've never used italki, haha. And it is more accurately to say that i learned 6 languages and i "acquired" one language - English, actually i almost didn't learn English grammar and vocabularies, i just read a lot in it and used it often. So i am not confident with my English, especially the grammar... 😅

man first congratulations you achieved your goal. all the tips are pretty awesome but i have to point out that as a Chinese but English speaker and now living in Tokyo from my point of view honestly you have to keep working on the pronunciation of the "shi" and "su" harder, these two Hiraganas are used to "one second identify" foreigners and native speakers (sometimes the "fu" but most native speakers dont pronounce it very well so...)here is a pretty good way I told my friends (for europeans and americans): go google translate, turn the mode to "Chinese to English" or whatever only make sure you are hearing the Chinese speaking part. Copy "西“ and "丝” and paste them into the Chinese text section then read after the AI pronunciation , these two pairs are exactly the same but Chinese version is way slower it helps you to find the speaking vibe, there is no that "round-like" tail but very straight forward.

Fir schreiwen fokusseieren ech mech just nemmen esou am Handy ze schreiwen.
