Yeah. Just spent the week doing a seminar, and there've been several conversations where people mentioned they'd rather have stuff themselves than needing to borrow it (power tools) or rather have a thing and be able to offer to help others than needing to accept help (car). Could just be the personality of those people. But I guess capitalism probably hightens that. Valuing 'productivity' over community, and ofc ideally everybody should buy their own things, borrowing stuff from others means less profit. But borrowing stuff is such a great opportunity to make connections! A lot of my neighbours I only started talking to cause we borrowed stuff from each other. Great video. Hope we can all get better at not being alone.

It's so great to have such lovely people around you and are being a lovely person to them as well :) I honestly love having friends who have interests different from mine. Like, listening to someone talk enthusiastically about the thing they love? Hell yeah! Joining them in the thing they love? Hell yeah! I've no clue about this thing, but I get to learn about it, and it makes both of us happy!

Disappointment is a strong word, I don't think that necessarily applies to being late every time. Being on time is very important to some people, sure. But everybody has different things that they value highly. I've probably disappointed my grandparents a lot by showing up in jeans and tshirt, rather than something nicer, cause they value appearance a lot. 5 minutes late to coffee to me is basically on time ^^ But I also totally get that life is busy and things (or lost tourists) get in the way, so I still wouldn't say I'm disappointed if someone is later :) So so much good has already come out of you :) Thank you for sharing your family's story. May the good memories of your grandfather live on.

Check out "Why Cars Rarely Crash into Buildings in the Netherlands" by Not Just Bikes) No umbrella is annoying tho. I think it's best to treat the books as extra content with a slightly different canon than the show. It isn't necessary to read the book to get the full story of the show or vice versa, but it is a fun read with characters that will be familiar to you

Today we know much more about the animal kingdom. This bisexuality and this attraction between man and woman does not exist. Men are just instinct-driven beings. A woman's pregnancy speaks against bisexuality. A woman no longer has any sexual interest in men when she is pregnant. We actually live in gender segregation and are not heterosexual.

I think bodies in general have the intellect of a toddler, at most. Can recommend fitted earplugs and noise cancelling headphones. Combined. Definitely an investment, but very worth it if you like quiet and sleep. (Can also recommend using headphones/turning the volume down to be nice to other people around. Ahem. Adult neighbours who definitely _should_ know better.)

I just looked-up Chinatown, Philadelphia and found out that, like rest of the city, Chinatown also follows same traffic rules made for cars, not communities. Is there something AAU doing about that?
@KatrinaEames
@KatrinaEames 8 ай бұрын
I am not 100% sure that I understand your question, but I'll do my best to answer. Chinatown is a part of the city of Philadelphia and therefore the neighborhood is subject to the traffic laws made by the city and state of Pennsylvania. I think you might be interested in learning more about the history of the community, particularly the way the community came together in the 1960s-1980s to fight against the plan to massively expand the highway that runs through the neighborhood (the Vine st. Expressway) and tear down a local church and school. Due to the recent increase of federal infrastructure spending, the city is finally taking a serious look at capping the Vine st. Expressway and reconnecting the neighborhood which the community has been asking for for a long time. You can learn more by reading this article: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/may/05/a-freeway-tore-through-this-chinatown-decades-ago-now-a-new-threat-looms

@@KatrinaEames Re-reading my comment, I can see that it was not properly worded. I was comparing the Chinatown with old marketplaces in China with their narrow streets and their exclusive foot traffic. That kind of places generate multifold higher revenues per unit area and also give a higher sense of community to the local residents on a day-to-day basis. Philadelphia Chinatown is wide streets with one way traffic. These wide streets with ample parking spaces decreases the population density leading to reduced person-to-person interaction. People don't make plans to meet the person living half-a-mile away who they see around during their chores and have a familiarity with. When area is sparsely populated, you reduce the chances of interactions with new and old people. You reduce the chance of having that sense of community. The cars on the road isolate people. They also reduce the chance of getting business to small shops, because people with cars would like to stop and park at a big establishment where they can get all the things instead of making multiple stops. Sorry for the wall of -cow- text.
