Englishman known for building an SD 1 with a rolls royce merlin V 12 engine has passed away today, crushed when the car slid off his lift….. Is something I really hope i never see as a headline … Good grief that lift scares me to death

Been watching this joyous creation for many years 🙂🇬🇧 Arguably the best installation of that engine in a car. The Peterson/Bentley Meteor is gorgeous but not a daily….. obviously Charlie’s would be ruinous in regular use, but no bigger footprint than any SD1. Much as I have always marvelled at “the Beast”……… its looks are challenging and it sounds like a bag of hammers…….. it never, in my opinion, sounds like a Meteor/Merlin…….. whereas Charlie’s under load, sounds like a flypast from a Spitfire. I’m so glad he’s still out playing with the car…….. and hope he continues. The likes of Charlie and Allen Millyard epitomise our Nations unique talents…. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🇬🇧🏁

A good alloy rad will outperform copper/brass and be a LOT lighter. These 3" thick things they sell though are not great. I had one,, went to a factory Holden rad about an inch thick and no more problems. Modern cars with a/c and other coolers dont have issues hence my reverting to OEM. Mind you it is a V8 Holden rad in a 500hp V8 Ford!. I also have the same rad inmy 71 Ford Galaxie and that is 400ci with a.c and a big transcooler. 2 ton car. Yes I know it is just a lightweight as the Meteor is nearly that weight!! As for this car?? Bloody hell it is different. Over engineered and heavy. But nothing will break. Steering is bit average though the system is the same as many 4 wds. And then it seems a TH400 and a Ford Commercial diff. Though I suspect you have to be gentle on them as for the torque will smash both of them.

Fantastic. Thank you. What an extraordinary beautiful custom and talented, humble builder. Lie many here, I've been following Andy's work since the early Custom Car mag days. Strange and wonderful creations culminating (so far!) in Deja. As a side note, I'm impressed with the Riley Owner's club. I was expecting cries of Heresy!, but happily none, only praise.

A lot of the aftermarket aluminium radiators aren't good from either heat rejection or robustness.

Really enjoyable to watch - absolutely resonates with me regarding working through the theory before making things. That's the difference between an engineer & a tinkerer....the amount of peolle who claim to be doing "development" when they have zero understanding of what they expect to see & more importantly why. Clearly Charlie researches the topic, understands the relevant point & then makes things. Doesn't workout every time but iterates, researches, takes advice & goes again....the definition of development.

So, putting humongous engines in small cars is not strictly an American thing then. I did take some aero engineering and found Stanley Hookers book, one he wrote, and seem to remember him saying he did contribute something to the superchargers on the Merlin. I am in awe of British engineering. I made friends with several British guys here in the Seattle area, working at Boeing. Thanks for the inspiration.
