Few points that are clearly wrong “Jesus was being a feminist” This is absolutely NOT the case of what was going on here. Bringing back the original intention of marriage, was because it had become primarily legalistic, and not what God intended. It wasn’t so that women could now have the ability to divorce or anything of that sort. We still see the hierarchy in relations as man as the head. THERE IS NO EXCEPTION TO DIVORCE the adultery clause completely defeats the rule, and to say it is an exception is just straight up terrible exegesis

Another excellent discussion, thank you for sharing. It seems we've been plagued with denominations at least since the church in Corinth. I believe the source of denominations and differences in opinions lies in our human condition. A tour of a concentration camp clearly shows the depth of inherent evil we have inside us. Rev. Elizabeth, when you spoke about your mother, I had to chuckle. She sounds like my mother did. My mom was a Connecticut yankee trapped in the deep south. She was well assimilated and you would never know she grew up in Hartford until a conversation turned to money and she said dollah. :) Your podcast is an incredible asset for me. I'm an Eucharistic Worship Leader and Lay Preacher in a small rural church in Florida. Your discussions broaden my shallow understanding. You are a blessing. TY

Hi - it is obvious that you work hard to prepare a beautiful service but I feel it is missing some personality… I feel the sermon should be less formal and follow more of what you discussed in your podcast… It will help the congregation better understand the message and retain it… Not feel they attended a university lecture…. Also, don’t read it… You know your stuff very well and it would be more meaningful if you stand in front of the congregation, deliver your thoughts and views directly with emotion and a connection to current life experiences… Hope this helps… keep going!!!

To Elizabeth, That was another excellent sermon, as always. I have listened to the sermon on Monday September 23. Excellent sermon. The light will come. I know there are three ways to spell the word Ketchup. The word Ketchup is spelled Ketchup. The word Ketchup can also be spelled catsup. And the word Ketchup can also be spelled catchup. Probably there is more than three ways to spell the word Ketchup that I am not aware of. I know there is three ways to spell the word Ketchup. I am used to spelling the word Ketchup 'Ketchup'. You can buy Ketchup! Or you can make Ketchup! This is a recipe for Home-Made Tomato Ketchup. This recipe is an old recipe. This recipe came from way back from the years the late 1800s. A recipe to make: HOME- MADE TOMATO KETCHUP Take as many Ripe tomatoes as you need, wipe the ripe tomatoes clean, cut the ripe tomatoes up and cook the ripe tomatoes until soft; strain the ripe tomatoes through a sieve. To every 16 cups of ripe tomato add 2 cups of vinegar, 1 scant teaspoon of red pepper, 1/4 cup of salt (1/4 cup is right), and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add, tied in a bag, 1 tablespoon of black peppercorns, 2 tablespoons of dry mustard, 3 tablespoons of cinnamon, 2 tablespoons cloves and 1/2 tablespoon of mace. Boil very slowly 4 to 5 hours. Remove the spices. Bottle while hot. That was an old recipe, from the years the late 1800s. This recipe is a Home-Made Tomato Ketchup recipe. And now, with this recipe, you can make your own Home-Made Tomato Ketchup! Have a great day.

Interesting that Jesus talks from a third person perspective on this second effort to forewarn the disciples about his coming death and resurrection. Jesus is communicating as a human here on their level. Why? Would it make the message easier to understand? Perhaps. But the passage tells us that they walked on arguing who was the greatest. Could this have been because Jesus just communicated that he would be leaving them and they would be on their own or was it simply that they were back home and concerned how they would be perceived? Jesus then flips back into first person teaching mode as the son of God. More powerful and far reaching when deciphering his words that remind us of the rewiring that we must undergo to create true intimacy and relationship with God. Just found the perspective interesting. Thank you for sharing God bless you

As you politely sparred over whether or not Christ’s suffering was God’s will - and did the Father direct that Christ should suffer and (in addition) does God want us to suffer, I was delightfully intrigued by your perspectives. I think I would agree with Reverend Kennedy, that both viewpoints are based on something positive. Rev Garnsey’s focus on serving others and caring for the suffering and needy highlights that service to others is vital to our becoming one within Christ’s Community. For me this is scary because the main theme of so many of the prophets was encouraging others to repent. Repentance leads to baptism and forgiveness of sins. And some of us don’t like to reach out to those we find intimidating or annoying. Serving others allows us to better reach out so that we can strive to become one with them in Christ; but the risk of being rejected or worse is the scary part. I believe that Father Peter was also on target in suggesting that the Gospel portrays the Father as approving of, expecting, Christ to suffer - and it must have broken the Father's heart. If all of us are guilty of sin, then doesn't the Law of Justice demand that we must satisfy the demands of justice to enter into God’s presence? Only Christ could satisfy those demands. God’s loving mercy could only be administered after justice had been satisfied. An Episcopal vicar suggested to me a while back that Christ’s Atonement is no longer a subject of focus within the Episcopal Church. I hope she was wrong. The Way of the Cross is an invitation to yield to the loving Christ and try to become one with Him. By yielding to Christ we allow Him to sanctify us that we might eventually become one with Him and one with the Father through Him. The Father allows us to suffer out of His great love for us. For He knows the vastly disproportional blessings that will ensue. He knows that if done with a broken heart and a contrite spirit we can offer up our sufferings for others in Imitation of what Christ does for us and participate with him in the Davidic Covenant. Father Peter made reference to ancient messianic passages. I would close with a link to one from Isaiah 53: 1-10 (Avraham Gileadi - Isaiah Institute translation) isaiahexplained.com/chapter/53

After a lifetime (I was raised in a non-religious family) of exploring a number of world religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism), I was recently laying in the hospital after a cycling accident, scared of a dangerous infection that threatened to overtake me and looking at what felt like was a void -- the very end of existence, I felt a sense of surrender/capitulation to Christ. It didn't feel like I somehow 'solved for X' or something, but that HE FOUND ME. Alone in a hospital bed, I cried. Then I later read this about Barth: "Among Barth's early theological influences is the existentialist Kierkegaard, whose idea of conversion as a surrender to God in a time of crisis was further developed by Barth: God is the infinite "wholly other", whereas man is finite, needy, and sinful (Paas 2016:267). Barth's view of the Bible is that it is the record of God's revelation - which is, essentially, Christ; the Bible is not intrinsically revelation but becomes revelation when it is applied to a person at a time of crisis (Paas 2016:267)." I still struggle at times with the whole thing, but I am somehow anchored to it now. I read also that Barth said, "Lord I believe, help my unbelief." Reading this made me feel less broken. I felt, and still do feel, better about my struggles, knowing that somehow the end goal is achieved FOR ME -- but never by me. These lectures are thought provoking. Blessings

I wonder if when Jesus talks about eating his flesh he is asking me/us whether God is really enough. If all else were stripped away would our relationship with God be enough to sustain us? Hard concept and question when we have so much in our society. I am always deeply moved when I read about the mystics desire for God and pray for this for myself. Blessings and thanks to you all. ❤

A thought on verse 47 - πιστευω ("believe"; the word appears 85 times in John's Gospel). This might just be the most important word in John's Gospel. Worth noting is that faith only appears as a verb: It is always an action. In other words, "Faith" doesn't exist in John's Gospel, but believing does. It is not by intellectual assent that we live, but fully trusting in God. Sadly, it often takes us to get to that moment where all hope has been lost that we actually begin to trust. So where are people today where their hope is lost or at least waining?
