Regarding the discussion about whether teachers should read the same readers as their students, or graded readers in a language they are learning or simply a novel in their own language. I feel that as, ideally, the teacher should have read all the graded readers their students have available, it might be best to read these graded readers, so they can make comments on any books students ask about. I even recorded myself telling classes about the books I really recommended at some levels.

It's inspiring, Sir. Thank you. So far, I just ask my students to read the graded English books adn ask them to write on their literacy journal about the title, the summary of the books (2-5 sentences), the positive side of reading it, and some difficult words (2-5 words).

Sir, I did like your presentation so much. I loved the way you summarize intensive and extensive reading and the importance of extensive reading in Ss’ lives. Thanks for sharing this interesting lecture.

If you do in class extensive reading in a high school foreign language class, how long should the extensive reading session last?
@jaliladalal65743 жыл бұрын
Read his book: What Every EFL Teacher Should Know. You will find your answer there.
@ronlugbill14003 жыл бұрын
I don't teach EFL. I am not paying for a book. I still have no answer. But I can figure it out for myself because no one will answer this simple question except by saying, "buy the book".
@pilarguerrero128742 жыл бұрын
@@ronlugbill1400 It depends on the kind of extensive reading, if it is a graded reader text, it depends on the length og the text, and the reading speed of the students, I guess 30 to 40 minutes. If you want to do extensive reading for fluency, then it takes around 7-8 minutes only. At least, that's what I understood from this video.

I have matured over 19000 anki flash cards. Around 9000 in English and the rest in Italian. And based in my experience, flash cards are very, very useful. The main problem is that sometimes you cannot choose the right word. That happens when you have synonyms, but there is only one who is the right one.

For me the only value of assessing my students' reading was formative with the aim of getting the ones making great progress to carry on and of getting the ones making less progress to catch up with the others. I provided them with feedback on a regular basis assessing quantity and level compared to targets, each other and/or past students. Where I would disagree with Mark is that I was never aiming to give a grade and much less a grade that might affect the overall grade for the course. Another difference is that I never considered that students might be trying to cheat. But the two differences are related as why would students cheat unless there was an advantage for them of, for example, getting a better grade? I also never considered reliability because I wasn't testing my students: I was only giving them feedback on how they were doing so I never worried about students possibly lying. Incidentally, we only graded students on their speaking and writing and we did this at least every ten weeks.

I hate to break in here with some complicated math, but 50% are above average, and 50% are below average. Maybe he meant to say significantly above/below average, but my point is that it's worse than he says.
@YuzuruA3 жыл бұрын
actually no :) 50% will be above the MEDIAN 50% will be above the average only when the distribution is simetric the average can be really skewed, letś imagine a situation in africa, where 85% of the population gain less than the "average" nerding out a little here

"As an English learner for 30 years, an English teacher/instructor for 18 years and as a PhD candidate, I have been following Stephen Krashen's videos etc esp on the importance of Reading, and very very very luckily just today when I googled Stephen Krashen again, on the right handside I saw some other names one of whom was Paul Nation whose name I definitely remember from many articles. I said "let me go through Paul Nation,too". Oh my God, Oh my God.; an unbelievable man.; Oh God, take him to your paradise/heavens pls.; he has already deserved it. What a prolific, hardworking and generous professor. I salute you sir.. in my culture we kiss the hands of our elderly and respected people.. if u allow me, I would like to kiss your hands. I thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. May God/Allah bless you.. May He protect you and your beloved ones from any trouble here and in the after life. I learn more from you about ER. I hope I can meet you vis a vis some day.

@kozavr6 жыл бұрын
To move from theory to practice, there has to be created a lot of books on every possible level. It can be done by two ways - AI or crowd effort, like creation of Wikipedia
