I'm finding that I'm having some luck with Caulerpa taxifolia. It's irritating that my clean up crew seem to ignore my hair algae issue and destroy my seagrass.

@@unpopularreefer No worries. 😊 What can i say? I just really like green color. 💚 There are also some anti-algae water drops. I personally have Tetra Algae Control Liquid, however i stopped using it sicne i bought afew mossballs for my freshwater tank and the liquid could hurt them. I also have a siamase algae eater and a pleco, who help me a little with any up-comming algae problem. 😁

Do you change water with water from the ocean? And how often?
@unpopularreefer2 ай бұрын
Whenever I go to the beach I grab a 20 Litre drum full of sea water. This is about a 10% water change for my tank. This is why I end up with random creatures showing up all the time. When I’m being good I’ll do the 10% change weekly but I sometimes let it go for months. Probably the reason for my hair algae issues.
@karmo0o1782 ай бұрын
@@unpopularreefer I live about 12 hours from the beach so i go there once a year. I don't do any water changes since it is basically a waste of salt. After 2 years i thought i only have hair algae but after i started feeding a bit a lot of other types appeared out of nowhere. Fish are still alive but im looking to add something that would eat the hair algae and leave macroalgae but not sure yet what to add. I have seen you tryed with sea urchin but i think even a small one is too big for my small tank.

Most sea urchins don't survive any exposure to air since they can't get it out of their system. Which is also why they are usually packed without any Air in the bag.
@unpopularreefer3 ай бұрын
I found this guy washed up on the beach so I think any damage had been done before I got to him, so I'm absolving myself of any culpability in the death of the featured urchin. That is helpful advice for next time though, I'll make sure I don't expose my freelance urchins to air before adding them to the tank.

@@Meesiz same we got several species of seagrass. There’s widgeon grass, it prefers brackish and fresh water, turtle grass, the densest grass that likes saltwater, manatee grass which gets very tall, shoal grass with fine leaves, stargrass which has big leaves, and paddle grass or Johnson’s seagrass makes a good carpet.

So cool to see some beautiful temperate marine fishes on display. Who says that colder water organisms can't be beautiful!
@unpopularreefer6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think there are a lot of interesting cold water species out there that just aren't given enough attention. I'm hoping in some small part to correct that.
@Meesiz6 ай бұрын
A lot of this stuff I don’t mean to sound hostile, but it’s cold water needs at least 62-58° I’ve personally kept cold water before, but mainly stuff from Maine and California as I live in the US…. But if you’re gonna keep the species, I’d highly recommend you get a chiller.
@unpopularreefer6 ай бұрын
I guess my current setup is kind of a seasonal tank. It gets to around 26 Celsius in summer and drops to around 16 in winter. Right now I notice the coral thrives in summer and the algae suffers a bit but we're heading into winter now and I assume the coral will die back entirely and I'm hoping the algae will get a boost. I am considering getting a chiller before next summer as it can get a bit to hot for the residents.

@@unpopularreefer don’t go all out just get something to start man, don’t wanna break the bank
@Meesiz6 ай бұрын
Love this setup man, I kept saltwater aquariums for six years, both cold, water and tropical like, and I gotta say, despite what people may tell you in this hobby, you don’t need no fancy light to grow any coral seagrass or whatever you wanna grow, you can really just use a full spectrum bulb now you want all these colors and things get expensive I don’t care but in reality if you just wanna grow coral, you don’t need an expensive light
@unpopularreefer6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I find most expensive lights focus on changing how your tanks look with alterable spectrum, wifi controls and features like that. In the end plants and coral don't particularly care as long as they're getting enough intensity for enough time. I have been considering doing an outdoor brackish tank using only sunlight but I'm only at the planning stage right now.

I’ve got them under a Kessil A160WE. So a fairly high end freshwater light, having said that it’s half the recommended lighting for my tank but I’m getting decent macro growth and the Xenia is thus far doing well.

Do you think one could keep intertidal seagrass in a 30L aquarium without animals or would alge overrun it?
@unpopularreefer Жыл бұрын
I think it would be possible. I’m my earlier videos I document my failed attempt at doing just that. The trick would be having a nutrient base for the roots and capping it with sand to keep the nutrients out of the water column to keep the algae at bay. A few shrimp as cleanup crew wouldn’t hurt either.

It would have made for interesting viewing. He was first introduced into a community tank up until he ate the community and then escaped. Unfortunately when I discovered him creeping around my bedroom like a Freddy Krugeresk nightmare I didn't think to start recording. Another time I almost stood on him when I taking a midnight piss. That's why there is a lid on his tank now with a brick on it.

Watched all your videos so far and liking the experiment tank. I have been keeping planted freshwater tanks and looking into planted salt tanks. I wouldn’t get too discouraged about the sea grass. Maybe try root tabs or If your willing to tear down the tank try 1/2-1 inch of dirt with a sand cap. My guess is they are root feeders. That crab is an asshole for sure 😂. Good luck from the US!
@unpopularreefer Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the feedback. I've tried a much deeper substrate on the new setup and I've placed a few root tabs in as well. I was concerned about using dirt with a sand cap as I have try this on arsehole crabs tank and as he's tend to do he dug up all the soil into the water column and my nutrients went through the roof. This was the reason I filled it with chaeto.
@theGamingtrees Жыл бұрын
You know, it's normal for aquarium plants to "melt back" when placed into new conditions. The leaves all turn brown and the plant is still alive but is much smaller with just the roots and base, then the leaves grow back. It looks to me like you've still got some little sea grass shoots growing back there, which would make sense if that's what happened. Also, little shrimp and stuff don't usually eat living plant matter, but people often misinterpret them eating brown melted leaves as them eating living plants. Be patient, you might be surprised when that Seagrass starts shooting back up.

You need to add some soil or substrate under the sand for the plants to feed on, adding nutrients directly to the water will only feed the algae
@unpopularreefer Жыл бұрын
Yeah that did become apparent not long after increasing the nitrates. I have tried adding a nutrient layer and capping it with sand however a problematic crab that likes to dig soon upturned all the nutrients into the water column and I had a bloom of algae like you wouldn't believe.

Algae is killing your plants, get some snails
@EffYouMan Жыл бұрын
Scratch that, your plants are already dying too quickly, snail will just continue to eat them, remove the snails until you fix everything and get some growth that can support them.
