Sam Scott was an Ottawa native and long-time Pipe Major of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. He saw action in WW2 for 5 years and was the only Canadian piper on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Prior to his war service he spent some time in the Highlanders’ Club Glasgow where he made life long friends with Pipe Major Peter R. MacLeod who penned this classic 6/8 march. A much loved and respected piping figure in Ontario pipetunes.ca/tunes/pm-sam-scott/

@@PipingHotMess im finding the transition to pipes hard everything i can play on the chanter is now very hard. I think it just takes time.
@PipingHotMess11 күн бұрын
That’s completely normal. There’s a lot going on with the big pipes. Hang in there. You’ll look back at yourself in another 6 months and be surprised at how far you’ve come.

I’m 2 1/2 months on the practice chanter, I just learned this as my first tune. I enjoy your videos!

definately better! Top hand is flat, try to sink the reed a bit. Pretty controlled fingerwork! great job.

1 tip, take a look at Dojo university from Andrew Douglas. Specifically the courses, bagpipe maintainance and tuning. Your playing is not bad but your set is not tuned properly. If you can do that, you will sound WAY better. Trust me
@PipingHotMess2 ай бұрын
You’re right that my set isn’t sounding it’s best today. Probably because I just rehemped my chanter and reed. That being said it’s is what it is on the day and it’s an honest snapshot of the learning experience.
@bagpiperbruce2 ай бұрын
You might not like to read this or you will see it as feedback. I hope the second since it is ment like that. Your drones and chanter both could be tuned up way better. Its not a matter of only hemping and adjusting some reed bridles. If you learn to tune your drones to a low a and keep pressure you will improve your sound allmost magically. Trust me on the dojo university. Give it a try! You wont regret it
@PipingHotMess2 ай бұрын
It’s all good brother. Believe it or not, I went through that course a while ago. I”m in the middle of a regular maintenance session on the pipes right now. Yesterday I rehemped the chanters which also meant messing with the reed. Today’s job will be the rehemping the drones and checking the bag for leaks. It’s been my experience that the pipes need to settle after doing this and fine tuning can take some time to lock in. But this is also an ongoing process and I will definitely keep working on improving my overall sound. I really do appreciate any feedback that will help me get better!

@PipingHotMess6 ай бұрын
Welcome to a fantastic hobby. It’s not the easiest of instruments to learn for sure but it’s very rewarding. I generally aim for at least 30 minutes on the practice chanter and at least 30 minutes on the pipes each day. Often it’s more like an hour on the PC. Saturdays / Sundays are generally a write off.
