Seems to me it could fill up with urine pretty quickly
@ecoflowm3 күн бұрын
That would be a lot of urine, like 90 litres! Thankfully, these systems all have a leachate drain for excess liquid so that the composting chamber doesn't become inundated with moisture and cause the compost pile to turn anaerobic.

I have one of theses. Not this small, (I got the family version of the EcoFlo) They delivered to my local transport depot in town, picked it up installed it in less than one weekend. I perhaps have to exchange bottom bins every 6 months. Its council approved, doesn't smell but I didn't build it in an airless cupboard either. It's basically on a platform with 3/4 walls and has a great view. People go wrong when they want to put these in a small one window cupboard type room. Mine has an exhaust fan that pulls air from above the seat and vents it well above the roof level. So sitting there you feel the draft as it pulls air from the room, hence why you don't have a smell. People have helped me empty a full one once its been in the sun composting for 6 months (Sometimes longer, its just rotated with the one that is full). They are generally pretty apprehensive until its opened and then they are pleasantly surprised. The comment always is, "Oh wow it's just soil now, there's no smell or anything. I was expecting something gross!" I don't why people think their poop won't break down like every other animal on earth but it does. I generally dig quite a big pit, empty the bin into it, cover slightly, pop a new tree in and fill the rest of the hole. (You want to put some soil between the roots of the tree and the compost just to ensure you don't burn the roots at all even though you probably won't). I have a fantastic orchard now and the trees are all thriving.
@ecoflowm17 күн бұрын
This is amazing! We would love to see pictures of your orchard if you're willing to share! But yes, the compost can be very nitrogen rich which can be harsh depending on what you're planting. Honestly, the exhaust fan is my favourite part (not just because it keeps odours out of the bathroom!) for the gentle breeze you get while sitting on the pedestal 😂

Cool idea to sanitize it by baking in the sun 👍 It seems like it would break down significantly within a few weeks, is six months just to make sure you go through a warm season? And it’s nice that you never have to touch or dump the bucket until it is broken down. That’d be enough compost for a gigantic garden.

Human waste needs more time than animal waste because of human spread pathogens. Here in the states, homesteaders recommend at least a year or more before putting it in their gardens.

The six months composting time is based on our certification to Australian and New Zealand Standards 1546.2. But there are lots of factors that influence the time it takes for waste to breakdown - mainly temperature, oxygen, moisture, and carbon:nitrogen

There are a lot of factors that influence the composting process, like temperature, but the national standards recommend 12 months. In ideal conditions this time can be a lot shorter; for example, here in Queensland we have composted a full chamber in less than nine months. But we will always let the composting chamber sit for a minimum of 12 months to be safe and meet that standard.

@@ecoflowm cool design! Cook County Minnesota includes year-round composting toilets in their ordinance, only they don't allow any drain tubes or pipes - it has to be totally contained with no overflow. Just mentioning that - the Clivus M1W out of U.S. is self-contained I think - but not as compact as your design. I ended up going with the C.R.A.P.P.E.R of the small social business, "Toilets for People" - just ordered it. I already have a Nature's Head. Legally if the sewage of solids from the toilet do not have contact with new sewage - for 12 months - then it's no longer septage. So I'm hoping by switching between the two toilets I can maintain that 12 month rotation. Also if the toilet is in a structure then you need a permit - and usually it's only allowed for a seasonal recreational building permit. But I plan to just keep the composting toilets in tents as shelters that get taken down every six months - and moved. I can do six month seasonal camping with no permit needed. I could possible get a year-round composting toilet permit from my county but I'd rather not worth risking the trouble - I talked to my county planner for sewage permits - he just did not understand composting. He preferred an incinerating toilet. I think I can keep my C.R.A.P.P.E.R. in a structure without it being a privy - since it has no overflow drain into the ground and more importantly I'm going to grow Oyster Mushrooms inside the toilet - aka a Myco-Toilet! It's been tested out at University of British Columbia - it gets rid of the smell and accelerates the composting rate. thanks - I technically have the structure registered as a mushroom farm building with the I.R.S.

@ecoflowastewatermanagement3756 Im interested in setting up cabins on undeveloped lots and your product and a gray water system would be great. @ecoflowm Жыл бұрын
@@arthurh1969 Well, the regulations can vary a lot depending on where you are and what you're doing. But a greywater system compliments the compost toilet really well, so you're on the right track! The toilet being displayed in this video is certified to Australian and New Zealand Standards 1546.2, with the leachate drain shown. Most liquids are absorbed into the composting pile, what's not absorbed drains through that false floor - the leachate will evaporate or drain through the purple hose. So no need to waste energy on incineration
