Nice! I play it out of C position--no barre chords to play in the "I can't believe" part.

Kate Wolf reminds us that everyone has a story to tell, if we take the time to respectfully hear it. We rarely do, but she did in the case of the Old Street Singer.

Hell yeah! Brings back memories... I used to listen to this in the KFAT days. I always loved it. (The fact that I was also doing NyQuil myself only made it that much more memorable.) And Kathleen kicks it on this awesome rendition!

Sounds like no one bothered to tell the story about this one … Steel guitarist Herb Steiner, a member of Austin band Alvin Crow & the Pleasant Valley Boys, wrote the song about harmonica player Roger Crabtree, an alumnus of Waylon Jennings's band. According to Herb, the Waylors were fond of their speed and would drink NyQuil in order to come down. From this, Roger got a hell of a NyQuil habit and pretty much couldn't go to sleep without a big slug of it at the end of the evening. The "slugs" he would take were stout enough that he once rolled out of a top bunk on the tour bus, fell three feet to the floor - and it didn't wake him up. Herb decided there _had_ to be a song in this, so he started reading the NyQuil box and gleaning phrases from it: "restful sleep your body needs," "analgesic decongestant and an antihistamine," "take only as directed" … and so on. They included the tune on their first album for Polydor records, and _Cash Box_ magazine named it their Pick of the Week - at which point the legal department at Vicks woke up and sent Polydor a cease and desist letter. (Something about the phrase "NyQuil junkie" got under their skin, you know.) The head of Polydor despised Alvin anyway, and delightedly canned the record. After that, the song went into "bar band legend" status, but there are a few other recordings out there. Alvin has recorded it at least twice more. Maybe the easiest version to find today is the Cornell Hurd Band's CD _Song of South Austin_ .
