That was incredibly irresponsible and dangerous. If that chopper had a sudden engine failure or clipped a tree. I'd be pissed to learn the school allowed my kid to spectate so close. Unlikely of course, but imagine what a snapped off rotor blade would do...

The D- prefix on that plane's registration notes that it is registered in Germany, which might mean a German crew flew out to assist with a fire in Portugal. Seeing international aid makes me happy.

Bucket size is limited to the mass the helicopter can lift. In this case, that bucket is filled with enough water to be equal to the mass of a european family car. When that mass is released and tumbles in to droplets, it becomes the equivalent of several large US firetrucks spraying several minutes of full pressure water on the same fire, taking away heat from the air and covering the fire, seperating it from the atmosphere's oxygen. And, the heli can hit targets with more accuracy then a jet sized firebomber.

Best regards from Italy, Florence. I also own a 2001 Suzuki Jimny 4x4 with a m13a 1.3L petrol engine all original and I ride it on country roads and in the presence of mud and also use it on country roads and uphill and the roads are completely covered in snow ! For me, Suzuki Jimny is a good all-wheel drive SUV!

Water is heavy. 1 litre is 1 kilogram. That helicopter just lifted the mass of a good sized european car.

Not when in solution with water. Well, not ever actually, but it can combine with other elements in an explosive manner, and makes other stuff burn with more intensity, kind of like how magnesium can make a fire with iron and aluminium turn from hot metal in to Thermite.
