What if you dissolve Norpropylhexedrine (Cyclohexylaminopropane) in 50% Ethanol and 50% 2-methyl-2-butanol and cool it to -10°C (14°F) and then bubble HCl gas through it? Will the HCl still react with 2-methyl-2-butanol to form 2-methyl-2-chlorobutane, or will it stay 2-methyl-2-butanol and Norpropylhexedrine successfully becomes Norpropylhexedrine HCl?

Incredible video. I had the exact same procedure in my organic lab class and I was able to learn everything to a T through this video. thank you for taking the time to explain the reasoning behind some of the procedure's less obvious steps.

So what is the purpose of adding the ether? To rinse the round bottom and gather the rest of the material that’s left in the flask. But what does it do inside the separatory funnel?

Why is the final aniline(product) more soluble in water than the initial aniline(reactant)?

So to find the properties of a unknown you find it in this order? Density, solubility, boiling and melting point.
@jordanplemmons
@jordanplemmons 3 жыл бұрын
There is no particular order of physical properties you need to find to determine the identity of an unknown, but you do want to observe multiple physical properties to make that identification. For example, two substances could have the same boiling point, so it would not be helpful to identify an unknown based on only boiling point.

Is the final volume of NaOH in the buret for trial 3 20.91mL or 20.19mL? In the video you say 20.91 but in in the subtitles you wrote 20.19. I am not sure what to go by!

Sorry for the delay I just saw this comment. The final volume should be 20.91mL.

What's the mass of NaOH in the video?
@jordanplemmons
@jordanplemmons 4 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't need the mass of NaOH for any calculations. The solutions you use are aqueous solutions so their density matches the density of water which is 1.00 g/mL.
