A nice little introduction, but the high rate of missing autism diagnoses in the past, especially in those AFAB, means that it is likely that more like 3% or even 5% of people are autistic, rather than 1%. We typically have other disabling conditions besides just autism (though we don’t have to), which affect how disabled we end up being, both individually and over time. We often have other developmental disabilities such as ADHD or dyslexia; mental health conditions, like OCD, depression, or PTSD; and/or physical conditions, like epilepsy and connective tissue disorders. We may need help throughout our days to be safe and function, or we may go decades undiagnosed, finding ways to have relationships and work jobs, but always frustrated and confused at why so many things seem much harder for us than they are for others. We can even be “twice-exceptional”, like me; this means we have a high IQ but are also developmentally disabled in some way. I myself also have ADHD, dyspraxia, and a fairly complex chronic depressive disorder. I’m glad more people who do not have autism or a loved one who is autistic are trying to learn more about it! It’s a different way of perceiving and processing the world around us, for sure! 👍

Hi is it possible to communicate with DR Milton I believe I have stuff he will want to know about that is completely under the radar that is happening to adult diagnosed as autistic due to mh services harming us with misdiagnosed and horrible treatments. Followed by zero realistic support for adult autistics and female autistics. When we are then diagnosed. Service s are admitting female autism is not being diagnosed

My son was diagnosed with ASD in P5. He is now turned 13 and tells me that he is not Autistic, does not have anxiety however, that being said he won't go outside and doesn't sleep well. I'm so confused 😖 how I can help.

Brilliant! And there's much here that I recognize from my own life of managing my ADHD, my children's ADHD, and providing practical help to my Life Coaching clients. Great affirmation to hear that many of the tricks/ coping methods I'd "developed" are spot on. Thank you for getting this info out into the world of frustrated families, friends, caregivers, and we neurodivergent folk!

I've heard Dr Stasha Gominak talk about a possible deficit in acetylcholine and B5 which put people into a deap sleep. Do you know of any research about this in terms of autistic people??

I found this video by searching "is Scotland accepting of autism" on KZbinr. I'm autistic, and I looked it up because I want to move out of the US, and I'm considering Scotland. How accepting or stigmatizing a country is about autism is the most important consideration for me. Based solely on what was shown in this video, I am thinking that Scotland might be a really good choice. I think that your services look great. The only problem I have is your use of person first language (person with autism). Autistic people generally don't like that. We prefer diagnosis first language (autistic person). This is because we identify strongly with our autism. It is a core part of who we are. If you take our autism away from us, we wouldn't be ourselves anymore. We would be someone completely different. Person first language makes it sound to us like you are trying to say that our autism is not an important part of us. Like autism can be separated from our identity. But it is an important part of us and it cannot be separated from our identity. Person first language makes us feel belittled. It makes it sound like there's something wrong with us. There isn't. We're just different, that's all. And we're proud of it. So in the future, please use diagnosis first language and avoid person first language like the plague. I would respect you much more for that. Person first languages is one of the things that will make an autistic person instantly lose respect for you.

Hiya Lulla, tim from scotland, my town has the head quarters for Scottish Autism. we have a school for children not far from my home, my sister works there, i feel theres stigma where ever ppl live, recently ive been in touch with them, chatting with staff, i am a older women, i am waiting to see my G,P.while chatting with staff, they explained a few things to me, and for the 1st time in my life i could grasp what they meant. hope all goes well for you where ever you go.

A good and informative lecture. However you did not mention the sunlight therapy for autistic indixiduals. I follow sunlight therapy for my son and it not only calms my son but helps him sleep and increase his concentration/focus as well. Other parents i know are also following it. For myself I am following Adeerus Ghayan's guide and it has been helping my son. My experience tells me that sunlight therapy is very effective for autistic individuals.
