Back in 1984. When I first started working for Herman air. The main base was at St. Mary's. But I was based in Bethel. back then Emmonak's runway was right down the middle of the village. And I mean right in the middle of the village. Maybe 20 feet from the edge of the runway were homes on both sides. The used the runway as their main road and playground. We were always supposed to buzz the runway before you landed. But that still didn't stop them from running out in front of you when you were landing.

Using instruments to navigate and guide your aircraft is not VFR, it’s IFR flying the moment you cannot visually fly the airplane. Even though you have not filed an IFR flight plan, you have essentially switched from VFR to IFR.
@whamo1966 Жыл бұрын
I agree to an extent. Its not IFR, you are still operation under VFR. But you certainly are flying and navigating solely by reference to instruments. IMC, IFR, and instrument flight are terms that are often misused as synonymous but have distinctly different meanings legally.
@whamo1966 Жыл бұрын
Ok, great discussion. Here is a question. What are the instrument flight rules? Since that is what IFR stands for. Under VFR the pilots are responsible for separation, see and avoid. I am operating completely legally under visual flight rules, however I am also flying solely by reference to instruments. I can however see and avoid other aircraft. As long as they have the equipment required for night VFR flight.
@dresanchez4618 Жыл бұрын
@@whamo1966 Hi Steve! You make a great point as well. My argument would be that it can no longer be considered VFR flying if you operate in the clouds or under conditions that parallel IMC conditions. You are undoubtably flying with a VFR mindset under MVFR conditions at the minimum. Love these awesome conversations and thank you for your content🤘🏽
@whamo1966 Жыл бұрын
@@dresanchez4618 Still comes back to this. Night VFR is legal VFR, at least in the United States. Night time isn’t a meteorological condition, it’s not the same as having the windows blocked out. I can provide separation from other traffic. In fact it’s much easier to see other aircraft at night. I’m not required to file IFR, and I’m not relying on ATC for separation from other aircraft. Of course if I fly into a cloud or visibility is limited below VFR minimums I’d have to go IFR.
@dresanchez4618 Жыл бұрын
@@whamo1966 I concur with your point and stand corrected. Night VFR does include referencing certain avionics and you are in zero visibility due to low light versus being limited in your visibility due to meteorological conditions. I was actually born in Alaska in the 70’s and lived there for ten years. Keep up the awesome content and thanks for the enlightening conversation. Happy New Year!

Can be logged as IMC.
@whamo1966 Жыл бұрын
Logged as instrument, yes. My log book doesn’t have a column for IMC. It’s listed as instrument and that is for this very reason. You can be flying “solely by reference to instruments” without being in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
@raygreene480 Жыл бұрын
@@whamo1966 You were not flying in VFR conditions. You were flying in IFR conditions. The weather outside your plane was clearly Instrument Meterorogical Conditions. If you tried to continue flying with Visual Flight Rules, we wouldn't be reading this post you made. Glad you had adequate training to control the aircraft in IMC conditions. Cheers
@whamo1966 Жыл бұрын
@@raygreene480 thanks and I understand what you’re saying but night isn’t a “meteorological condition” and I wasn’t operating under Instrument Flight Rules. Look up the “moonless night letter” opinion issued by the FAA. It allows a pilot log instrument flight time during VFR flight. This type of flying definitely requires instrument skills, and no less so than flying in the clouds.
@raygreene480 Жыл бұрын
@@whamo1966 I have read the letter. I am referring to the absence of reference or a horizon. I like to liken it to someone painting the windscreen with black paint. Even without clouds or obscuration, IMC conditions exist without sky or ground reference which is the reason I said IMC and not IFR. You are flying VFR but in IMC conditions (no outside reference to horizon, sky or ground).

I was searching for tow pilots’ currency requirements, found that you need three tows or simulated tows in the past 24 months. I was trying to figure out how a simulated tow is conducted. Still looking. I’m living in White Salmon so your terrain was very familiar.
@whamo1966 Жыл бұрын
Essentially they are performed in an aircraft with dual controls and the check pilot simulates forces that the glider will create on the towplane, yaw and pitch and making sure the pilot makes the appropriate control inputs to maintain coordinated flight while also maintaining target tow airspeed. Special emphasis on airspeed control and recognition of glider signals and general towing operations. This requirement is waived for current glider pilots IIRC. We fly in Hood River, right across the river.

She is a joy to own, and I'm having a great time fixing her up little by little. Hoping to take her to the 1-26 Championships in 2023 all polished and ready to win!! Also, want to bring her home to Hood River to do some ridge soaring or maybe grab a wave flight if possible too!

I don't know what it is, but I am somehow fascinated by just how barren, cold and depressing this area looks ever since I discovered it on Google Street view. I always hate the look of our cold, snowless, overcast winter days stretched out over bland, flat, lifeless fields of dirt here in rural Ohio, but Prudhoe Bay/Deadhorse is a whole new level of muddy, frigid desolation that looks so soul-crushingly boring and depressing that it makes it appear like it is on another planet.
