Shit I was there trying to hack away at it with a kitchen knife. Never occurred to me to use scissors.

I've always just released my fish, but we're going camping to a place that's known for fishing, and I want to cook some fresh fish on the campfire. Thanks so much for a great video!!!

I’ve been catching and cleaning trout for forty years, and this method using scissors is an absolute eye-opener. And the skinning part... you’ve just corrected many years of “doing it the hard way”. Thank you so very much for sharing this video.

Do you recommend bleeding them right after there caught?

I haven't noticed a difference with these trout either way. I like to kill them if I will be taking them home for dinner.

This was the way I was taught from my very first trout as a young kid. I haven't fished for trout in probably 20 years and excited to have the opportunity again living back in Arizona this summer after all these years. I came back from Alaska where all we (or I) really cared about was silver salmon and halibut. It's nice to finally find a video to refresh my memory of my old ways. I did everything pretty much the same except I used a knife and cleaned on the spot, I have a question tho... I remember pulling the head back to skin it but I don't remember the actual snapping of the neck. My memory also tells me after cooking at camp there was an occasional bone to look out for while eating. This has me wondering, if I wasn't breaking the neck was I also deboning (for the most part) by leaving the spinal cord in tact? Like I said it's been a long time and my memory could be wrong but I am curious if this is the case, hopefully someone can clarify this. If no definitive feedback is given I will update this post as soon as I get a chance to try it out myself for those who may be curious.

how do you get the bones out?
@danno75838 жыл бұрын
On small trout I cut up the belly and around the bottom jaw like you do. but that's it. after that I just grab the cut piece and pull down to gut. Skinning is the same, but the fins stay on. I eat the tails on the small ones. I usually fillet the big ones like you have. Great vid and very nice fish.

If you click on "Show More" just below the description, you will see more information. The 15 trout we kept were shared by 7 of us who fished. I think we caught and landed well over 50 trout that day and as usual, we only kept what we could eat for dinner otherwise our take would have exceeded well over 35 had we gone for limiting out. Like you, I share the same sentiment about wanton waste. We're from Northern California. You may also catch a glimpse of a wolverine at Boca Reservoir that we spotted there in 2014 in you are lucky enough.

I was just wondering because we are only allowed three each here, and only five in possession. We cant have more than five in a fridge, or freezer no matter who caught what. It sucks, so I thought maybe you were in state that is not so strict.

I am SO GRATEFUL you shown your technique on here. I'm an AVID fisher lady, and I never kept fish to eat (BUT LOVE FISH) cause I couldn't gut them. I was shown 2 years ago with how to do it on Bass only by a dear friend. I caught Trout today, and kept them for the first time, cause I was eager to learn this way. I went to the store bought a pair of kitchen scissors and went home, immediately began on my fish. (I remembered every step-I watched this 3 times). I had all fish gutted and SKINNED nicely in 4 MIN !! Thanks so much for showing this, now I can proudly eat my CLEANED fish - "TROUT DINNER" tonight, that I caught myself, thanks to your teaching. Bless you Man !!

Interesting, I always scaled but never removed the skin. Good simple video although I prefer a small knife for gutting. Thanks, I had to look this up to show a friend in another country who's son caught her first trout. So you are now officially international.
