Gladwell offers a view of public education framed in the context of business. He suggests in order for schools to be legitimate, a contract between the school, children and families should be agreed upon. Gladwell tells us the contract will enable the school system to optimize the child’s educational experience so the child becomes intellectually fulfilled and career ready. The problem here is that Gladwell conceals several wicked problems. He glosses over curriculum as if learning experience in school is unimportant. He omits the environmental and physiological problems of poverty and family dysfunction nor does he offer discussion of the role of schools in preparing children for their future roles in a functioning democracy. Most importantly.... Gladwell fails to discuss hegemony, the loss of childhood and resulting social violence inflicted upon children as a result of “school reform.”
