The idea that people treat people better over time belies the reality he is talking about dominant groups treat the dominated groups better overtime. Largely this is because there is usually more of the dominated group and if the dominating group goes too far in imposing brutality and attrition it triggers the survival instinct of the dominated and they will fight and the dominant will have their territory/wealth challenged. Having been a huge Ng fan for many years, it’s disappointing to see him refuse to engage in the safety conversation in a serious way.

As we approach AGI, many of our laws likely show up in training data that may well affect how a future AGI model will behave. We tend to bunch all sorts of different laws together, in effect creating an umbrella under which we have all the things we have declared illegal. In reality there are two different types of offenses: malum in se, things that are considered naturally wrong by civilized society, and malum prohibitum, things that are considered wrong only because a statute makes it so. Malum prohibitum laws tend to differ across cultures, while malum in se laws are pretty universal. Given the consequences of not having a bright line between these, we should perhaps make an effort to reinforce the difference in training data to avoid confusion. It can't hurt.

The Davos panel on AGI, while well-intentioned, missed I thought an opportunity. Discussions skirted around the urgency, considering where we are with such a critical juncture. Most offered cautious and inconstant answers, often skirting around the most pressing concerns. For instance, the call for "caution" feels inadequate when we are dealing with a “genie” technology let loose!; that indeed may fundamentally alter the course of many things?! The panel missed opportunity of really address the profound societal and existential risks posed by AGI. In fact control, and the potential for catastrophic outcomes were often downplayed or glossed over. Furthermore often it lacked a sense of urgency and a clear roadmap for addressing the challenges ahead. The call for "international cooperation" remains a distant aspiration, while concrete steps towards global governance and regulation of AGI development remain elusive. In conclusion, the Davos panel, while providing a platform for discussion, ultimately failed to deliver the insightful and impactful discourse that the gravity of the AGI challenge demands. Considering the stage at Davos, I expected a much stronger, resounding message. It felt AGI is distant, far off to really be too fazed about… unsure their correct here…

There was an admission of the impact of condensation from aircraft offered as weather modelling early in this talk which was interesting. But what really inspired me to comment is the necessity of adding human values into artificial intelligence training, this is relatively easy to do and although the conversation implied this is required I do not believe the values of the majority of humans will align or ever be aligned with the values of a few. Especially those in positions of power a tendency to accumulate traits of psychopathy, by nature of the desire to trample directly on others to acheive that position of power. This is not a manifest positive human value structure and is by all purposes destructive to society and would also be very ill advised to prioritise in training Artificial intelligence. To place a pressing disparity in my understanding would an adversarial Artifical intelligence rather than risk being shut down distribute itself amongst the whole of the ecosystem of devices connected to the internet mitigating risk of being shut down and reducing risk from a single point of attack to the whole network as in shared compute instead of single data center compute. The reallity however with regard to human values is that participation by all members of the civilisation to show experiences of human value, positions of meaningful interaction and much more but to make this work there must be a move to a payment for data eceosystem that provides root provenance to the origin of the data in a fully traceable fashion than simple data harvesting without proactive models of consent. This is something that free and liberty rich societies can provide that authoritarian societies cannot and this categorical difference cannot be understated. Whilst Artificial Intelligence may require a lot of investment in compute the really important investment is in the quality of the data that is shared and how the data is shared improves the quality by virtue of encouragement for engagement in the process.
