📓 I dumped NANOWRIMO 8 YEARS ago after the 2016 election. Some self-righteous fool director there sent an email saying that if you voted for Trump, you are no longer wanted here. I thought that was so shitty to say and for the organization to put it under their masthead. The same people whine about the danger to democracy and free speech but promote ostracizing and canceling people over who they vote for. Now, who is the real threat to democracy? The book I was writing at the time was about a rock band in the early 80s. There was absolutely nothing about politics in it. But, that was enough to show me who they really are and I thank them for losing my business.
@literatimediumАй бұрын
@WhatsWrongWithTheStreet And as an American citizen, that is totally within your rights to walk away from financially supporting a company who doesn't align with your ideals. Just like it is the left's side to not associate with people who have shown care nothing for their safety and wellbeing. I understand that seeing the anger in the left side of the political spectrum might be scary to those that don't agree. HOWEVER. The left is not the side with the guns. They are not the ones following my neice around in school shouting "Your body, my choice." The left will continue to support any American citizen's right to exist and live their life, even if we disagree, but we will call the right out when their speech gets hateful because a culture of bigots is not a culture we want to support. The human rights of members of the right are not being systematically taken away (contrary to what some may think). I have less rights as a tax paying citizen in my country than the day I was born simply because I am not a man. This is a fact. This is not because of the Left. All the Left wants is to live their lives in peace, and to do so however they see fit as long as it doesn't involve violence. I do not condone violence. I never will. No matter which side starts it. But I will always stand with marginalized communities because the REAL problem in this country is the billionaires like Musk and Trump who want to sow divides among our people as a distraction for what they are doing: accumulating all the wealth for themselves.

I did NaNo a few years back and it was awful for me personally. Pushing to get the words in lead to crazy burnout and I didn't write for like three months after. Which is antithetical to the whole point of the challenge. Add to that the 80k book I wrote was absolute trash and it was so frustrating to have put myself through that I made a video last year about NaNo and why I don't like it. I'm more of the opinion to find a stride that works for you and keep at it. I like the Terry Pratchett method of aim for 800 words each day. It's enough that it's easy to keep up with and if it gets me putting words to paper every day it adds up way faster than if I do 2k words like two days a week because I fried my brain
@literatimediumАй бұрын
Yes, I agree! I think challenges can be fun and motivating, but I also felt burnout after NaNo last year.

I too opted out of NaNoWriMo this year. I found that my experience with the NaNo forums were not fun last year. So, this year I'm writing a novel, planning on hitting 100000 words by the end of December. It's sort of a double challenge. So ar, as of 10/14, I'm just over 30k words. Strangely, I feel less stressed than when I was doing the official challenge.

Completely agree! What is even the point of reviewing if it’s not your honest opinions? Then we can just replace everyone by star robots 😅 I’m not reviewing to market books, I’m discussing my experience, and that’s allowed. As respectfully as possible of course, we’re all still human and I’m not out to hurt anyone. Also, I see books as part of the conversation itself, it’s not a final product, the readers’ experiences of it is part of literature. And I would assume that authors want the conversations to happen. Oh and about publishing, if we can’t have opinions then what is even the point of it? We love and protect publishing because it’s necessary for democracy and free speech, and so then we have to include ourselves in that too. Great discussion! Subscribed just for that! 😊
