l read the articles he wrote while in high school and based my training on the weighted ball throw plan he listed. Got my university coach to buy this film and the ''stubby'' javelins in 1975.

Most of those events have been discontinued because they were too dangerous or else they were not really good tests of strength. Interesting how the sport has evolved to standard events.

@@gerlofholkema3110 It would be good if they came up with some new ones, I suppose. I like the static events, as in the Arnold, because strength is impressive. One thing they used to do but you never see anymore is lift vehicles or platforms with people on them as Louis Cyr did. Arm wrestling, bar bending and sumo type events are probably not wise and best discontinued. Fortissimus had some original and very hardcore events I've not seen before or since.

Thank you for posting this. Jim Banich was my high school sweetheart and a dear friend. We lost him to suicide in 2014. His dream was to compete in the Olympics, and I always wondered if his failure to make the team in these Olympic trials began the long spiral to that tragic day.

210 kg for overhead is huge (Gary Taylor) Since then Z and Eddie Hall did 215 and 216 kg respectively on the axle press -- which they also cleaned. No cleaning motion in this competition, however, making it easier. Still very impressive though.

This was not a push press. He did initiate the press movement with a body heave (aggressively pushing forward the hips, and using a backbend). This was still a valid olympic press

As a young boy i remember going to goodison park around this time to see several of evertons new signings in teaining, and george wood was one of them, such a happier time in the UK then, ok, we had the tories 🤮...but as a boy i was incredibly happy, compare it to the absolute madness we're seing now 😖....good to see geoff looking so fit and healthy, both were nice fellers.....where did it go wrong in this country ???

I feel like these events used to be much more grip and arm focused (no straps, lighter but more awkward implements that you can't easily get your mass under), whereas today they're more tailored to moving sheer weight, taking grip out of it with straps, and locked in with bigger but less awkwards impliments. Nobody talks about this. The old school seems much more athletic to me/ transferable to moving random objects, which aren't necessarily made to be moved, and things like wrestling, arm wrestling etc. For some reason people stopped talking about straps in the deadlift when the established logical standard since the lift was invented was no straps on a normal bar. Benny Magnusson and Andy Bolton are still the best ever in that form. I think Andy still has the stiff bar no strap record.

Once the iron curtain came down in the early 90’s the game changed. I know it’s era’s, training, nutrition and recovery now. Big Z would have walked through this like it was warm up! Anyway, go big Geoff, I was a huge fan, watched all this in the 80’s. RIP legend!

Thanks for uploading. Spoilers below: Sulby Prince really stood out to me at the barbell lfit, he got in an argument with the referee and then just went all out as if his life depended on it to best Andy Drzewiecki as if his and the lives of his loved ones depended on it. Going all out until he passed out, it was a very dramatic moment. Glad my boy Slaney was able to win once again, was very impressed with him when he one his first competition.
