Hi Paul, just discovered your channel. Some of the best I've found on Obsidian yet. Question: At 13:50 into the video you worked some magic to get a popup window. How did you get to that window? I was following right along until this window popped up. Lol. EDIT: Haha! I figured it out. Full stop is the period. Didn't know about this Windows key command. I learned something new. Thank you for the great videos!

Hi Urban, thank you for the positive feedback. Happy to hear that you found something new. The Windows + Period (Full stop) is a quick and easy way to get emojis into your vault. If you install the Hover Editor Plugin and hold down CTRL key you can pop out those notes as editable floating notes.

Hi RTIA2005, I would recommend putting your distilled notes inside your spaces folder unless they're related to a concept, idea or tool which I would put in the cards folder. If the snippets folder is outside the templates folder you will need to manually type to snippet location inside Templater Hotkeys. The Command Pallete is the place to add the hotkeys once set in Templater. Slash command needs to be enabled in Obsidian Settings ;)

I really appreciate the effort you put into creating your content and just wanted to share a suggestion, not to point out mistakes. Mind maps, as popularized by Tony Buzan, are designed to be very visual and thought-provoking by focusing on single words or very short phrases. Using longer sentences can sometimes make the map feel cluttered and take away from its core purpose. You might consider using 2-3 word phrases at most to keep the focus sharp and visually engaging. Of course, it’s just a suggestion, and I respect your creative process! In my opinion this is not a mind map but rather a congregation of information.

hi, i'm a design student and have been mostly using notion to organise my life for the past three years, and even set a digital garden (for portfolio and public notes) on there. not the most effective but for now its still doing fine for me. i have dabbled on and off into obsidian the past couple of months but nothing too serious, but was intending to recreate my ppv)within obsidian as well, just incase i were to ever switch over further down the line. one major part of notion is of course its databases, and i have saved design resources over the years, where i would have a gallery view of gifs/images/videos etc that i have saved for easy reference. i know that dataview only is able to query markdown files, was wondering is it possible to use dataviewjs to query a gallery or even table view of file types other than markdown in a particular file? tldr: for example right now, all my gifs live in the 05 - Extras/GIF file path, while images are in 05 - Extras/JPEG. what would the code be to create a gallery/table view to easily see my design resources in one page? apologies if this is a simple question, have little coding background and have tried 'consulting' chatgpt to find a work around before asking…

I remember an e-commerce marketer who commented, 'Hope is an overrated emotion.' His point was that if you have to hope for something, you have no clue or insight into how to actually get there. Hope replaces taking action and responsibility. I liked seeing how your mind map and literature notes were put together in Obsidian. That gives me some (not hope) insight into how you make something like that a useful tool in learning.

Thanks for the deep dive on Templater! It made me realize I may need QuickAdd, thanks for showing it Personally I do it this way : I have a shortcut to add a specific template that I call Note template in every file (almost) that I create. I have filename prefix for each of my template, so whenever I want to add a new book for example, I type : "SB George Orwell - 1984". Then I insert my meta note template, which will have a bit of logic depending on the first 2 letters. in this case it will insert the book template in the file, add in the meta data the dates ect just like you have + author: [[George Orwell]] and title: 1984 and move the folder to my SB (sources/books). It's nice for mobile as well as I can do everything in 1 action. Just wanted to share it :)
@PaulDickson713 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing your workflow Dylan. Have been using prefixes on some of my notes also. I like the SB idea, could work well for others too, Source/Video (SV) etc. Much easier than the whole word.

Thank you! I have been avoiding Meta-Bind Buttons because they seemed more complex than the original Button plugin. One thing I could not figure out with Meta-Bind Button was nested buttons, but I think your video may have given me the tip I needed. I have a note template that has a "New Day Log" button that create a new "Log Time" button below it, the current time on the next line, followed by a bullet point on line after. The "Log Time" button just writes out the current time followed by a new bullet when pressed. It looks like I need to create the button templates and then in my Note template use the "New Day Log" button and have it call another template to insert the "Log Time" button and the initial timestamp. The "Log Time" button would then just write out the current time and a bullet point. I *think* this would make use of the "insertIntoNote" action, which did not seem to be covered in Part 3 of the video. Thanks again for this great video!
@DionVansevenant20 күн бұрын
Aaand now I remember why "insertIntoNote" doesn't work for me: explicit line numbers. My logs might be on line 10, or line 6, depending on how much information is in the note before the Logs start. "insertIntoNote" doesn't (yet?) allow for relative line numbering, such as "1 line from current position"
@PaulDickson720 күн бұрын
Hi Dion, I can understand your initial sentiments about Meta Bind as it felt a lot more complicated than the original Button plugin. I find the Meta Bind Embed Feature quite useful compared to the tradional linking inside Obsidian. I did skim over a few of the "could be useful" button actions as I don't find them very useful yet. The buttons actions that are a bit fiddly are "replaceInNote, regexpReplaceInNote, replaceSelf and insertIntoNote" Did you want to share your template on the Q&A at MB Github, might be an easier way to do it compared to InsertIntoNote github.com/mProjectsCode/obsidian-meta-bind-plugin/discussions/categories/q-a Alternately have a look at the QuickAdd Plugin which has a "Capture" option where you could use the "Insert After" and target a Heading instead of a Line Number.

Hi Dale, I'm working on a Debugging Obsidian Bugs video at the moment which may be helpful. In the meantime though do you know where your Obsidian Vault files are located? If so copy everything but the .obsidian folder into a new Vault. This will load only the core plugins. Alternately go into .obsidian/plugins and change the name of the plugin folder until you identify which one is causing the issue.

If you feel your main Vault .obsidian folder is corrupted. Create a brand new Vault and move your folders/md files (excluding the .obsidian) to the new Vault location (leave the .obsidian folder as this may be corrupted). Only disadvantage is you have to reset all your Obsidian Settings and Reinstall Plugins. Have you got any idea about what may have corrupted Obsidian? If you can pin point the last known time it was working. Before installing a plugin, then you could just remove that plugin from the .obsidian folder. Do you have a Backup Schedule for files on your Mac? For PC I use EaseUS Todo Backup, this automatically backs up my Vault weekly so that I can restore if needed.

Thanks for trying to address the note categorization and resurfacing (finding) collected, and filed, information (notes) later. This is a tough problem to solve. You gave a great example of where to store a note (YTV as a source and Topic area of the YTV, that is stored as topic). However, your solution of having two notes for the same YTV with different info in them is not a scalable nor a long term solution, IMHO. It can also be confusing, especially when (not if) you forget which note has the detailed information your trying to resurface (find). The real solution is to have overarching Topics areas and sources and specific areas covered in YAML Properties and specific tags. Then the problem becomes three fold: 1) how do you create a useful and rememberable folder structure; 2) what topics and other properties should one define and consistently reuse and consistently extend to cover more information areas; 3) How to structure you tags hierarchy (similar problems to 2). Note it is difficult to come up with a tag hierarchy that is orthogonal to a file structure hierarchy that is also orthogonal to properties (and value hierarchies for each property that is a list). Mine tend to overlap and be duplicative at some levels of the hierarchy. BTW, I don't think ANYONE has adequately solved this problem. The LYT guys defiantly think they have, but I've used that method extensively and abandoned it because I hate having to navigate a bunch of MOC layers to find a note. Conversely, having large number of notes in a single directory is also problematic because its sorted alphabetically by note title/name and to find a note you either have to read all the titles/names in the directory or remember exactly the first couple of letters/words in the title/name.
@PaulDickson7Ай бұрын
@@deserthorsedude Thank you for watching and your feedback. Definitely a tough problem to solve. Showcasing the challenge of having two folders with a similar note can be a regular problem. I try keep one distilled note in the most obvious folder for easier recall but sometimes there are double ups. By using a combination of folders, tags and links it easier to flush out notes. You have made some very good points. I spent a lot of time trying to perfect the perfect system in the start but realised it doesn’t exist. Finding a system that worker for me was more important. Now its my hobby to showcase the good and bad and everything in between.
