The whole show speaks to the fallen state of the people in it, and humanity itself. So much that even angels in this show are fallen from grace. But this song in particular really hits home in a way you feel, long before you become aware of the show's theme. 1)"I want you to make believe it's the first time". A plea to ignore the singer's past sexual indiscretion and pretend this time is their first. 2)"And I gotta say to you: love will find a way and that['s] always true". A proclamation that ,despite it being an impossible ask, the conviction in the power of love (like the conviction of faith), will make the impossible happen. The impossible being that it can never again be the first time, and that we can't ever again believe that it is. The song's construction also reflects the theme. It starts with a brass instrument. Classically strings, and brass are associated with heaven. It then starts to devolve from the purity of what can be performed by an orchestra with a reverb'd and synth'd voice saying the first two lines; 1) & 2). It continues to devolve from there with CD skipping-esque vocals, and fully and obviously synthetic instruments. And further still when the sentences get chopped up and their parts rearranged. It becomes a remix of itself before it even had the chance to be the original. Like Scanty and Kneesock who ,as demons, never even had the chance of heaven to fall from. After every episode of the angels embracing debauchery we're sent off with the unreachability of reclaiming innocence and the yearning for it * . "So close. But far away so far I can't touch." The show has it's characters and the very character of the show itself caught between the desire to reclaim the lost paradise of innocence and the sour grapes attitude of embracing what takes them further from it because they know they can't go back anyway. And if this song can manage to convey that with nothing more than 3-4 lines of lyrics which don't speak a word of it then that's nothing short of genius. * by the end song [ Fallen Angel feat.
