the best essay of the MAN !!!!!....but you leave his most wacki and zero fucks give movie.....Inherent vice!!!!
@JoshuaLundquist7 күн бұрын
THis was great to watch, and you covered the best of his films. An hour or so later I thought "Wait, didn't he direct Inherent Vice?" It's hilarious that you left that one out but it kinda makes sense, too. I remember reading an interview of him saying he wanted to do his own "Big Lebowski" -whether that was facetious or said in jest or not, it feels like Inherent Vice sort of is his Big Lebowski / Fear & Loathing. Would be cool to see a review of that, although it's a departure and I don't think there's even a ton to unravel, but I might give it another watch.

I think you're way off on the pool oner in boogie nights. It's not almost immature or as "'look at me' as it gets" its taken from Soy Cuba and is one of the more low key tracking shots. The slow obviousness of the pacing doesnt equate showy to me, see La La land for that.
@EricRossReelАй бұрын
I know where it's lifted from--Burt Reynolds and him got into a dispute when Reynolds pointed out where he was taking some of his inspiration from. What i said applies to the whole film, all of the big showy moments . And even moreso when you look at the Wahlberg character. It's not as much a critique as you're reading it though. My take is like an Arnold Palmer,..half critique, half admiration...emphasis on the admiration half of it. More of an observation than anything. He was out to prove something with Boogie Nights and maybe (lol) fueled by some of that powder lying around by the pool

That was such an excellent piece of content. I will never look at his movies the same way thanks to you. I am curious about The Battle of Baktan Cross with such massive budget and not sure about Di Caprio as the main actor but happy to be surprised by PTA as you like to reference him.

You would do well to revisit this topic of sincerity, but contrast it with the insincerity of something like Deadpool vs. Wolverine. Here are some subtopics to explore: a) The way the Deadpool desire to join the Avengers, pursuit of his love interest, and desire to save his friends are played as sincere, but the sincerity falls flat because everything is a joke to him and he's merely saying the lines that are written for him to move to the next part of the plot. Contrast that with how Gattaca feels sincere, but the throwback to an earlier era lends a bit of theatricality to the performances, that while involving to those for whom that paradigm is written on their DNA (if you'll pardon the pun) may feel stilted and unusually detached to those for whom the theater is but a pale shadow of our glowing screens. b) The unified perspectives from which those in Gattaca view the world in contrast with the absurdly diverse perspectives inherent in the fractured perspectives embodied in fantasy characters from literally separate universes. While the Deadpool & Wolverine film emphasizes overcoming ego to literally join hands in the thwarting of evil, Gattaca's protagonist operates as an individual in a world hostile to him, enlisting the assistance of others at great cost to himself. A bonus here might be a comparison to the protagonist of There Will Be Blood. To bring this point home, you might talk about how how each individual self-isolates through the echo chambers of our devices, insulating us from the discomforts of social interaction and creates for us the equivalent of separate universes, whereas the pre-9/11 world accessed the world largely through identical sources and as we trace the path of media backward, we see that the world's media-based narrative forms confluence after confluence until we reach the dominating power of the church before bifurcating again into mystery cults and mythological interpretations of nature before that. c) Finally you may wish to touch on the ways in which the Deadpool & Wolverine narrative expands outward beyond the picture plane, involving the studio and the idea that the individuals playing the characters have lives outside of the roles they play as human beings as well as in other bits of media content. This contrasts nicely, but subtly, with the idea of the individual on the screen representing oneself or some aspect of our identities. The effect of such a treatment is somewhat lost on an audience that feels disenfranchised or otherwise detached from the world's increasingly absurd-seeming narrative.

Unfortunately Ryan burnt lots of bridges in the artist community with very ridiculous and horrible treatment of not just women but lots of other people as well. The NYT article only scratched the surface, most folks didn’t want to go on record. The industry is small. You make enemies fast. His pattern with women is just one of the most glaring red flags about him. Those who are in the music world like myself have all long known Ryan was/is a problematic dude. (I’ve had my own personal troubles with him over the years) Do I think his substance abuse problems are a factor? Yes. The guy hasn’t been able to stay sober for any long period of time. Do I think he has talent? Yes. But I disagree with your take on this has anything to do with the main stream music press and more people not knowing about him. His biggest/most successful songs have always been covers. He is at best a great cover band. He has never had a hit song on his own. I don’t feel bad for the guy though, he can still make and release music as he is doing. But I am glad the public did get a sense of what he is actually like as a person outside of his music..which is a problematic guy. People can vote with their wallet and their listening time that is fair enough. He certainly doesn’t need to be put on a pedestal anymore.

Disagree with the comment about how with the last embrace there’s no going back. Sofia Coppola put aspects of her life into Charlotte but she also based both of these characters in large part on Bogie and Bacall’s relationship. If you study closely how that all went down in real life then you will see something that most people will miss. This wasn’t the end of Bob and Charlotte’s relationship. It was just the very beginning of it.
