Very nice video. I have a 2000 K1200RS, recently bought with 47k miles for $2k. It had the ABS2 flashing in fault mode, which was why I thought it was sold so cheap. I reset the ABS and it works perfectly fine after that, but on my way home that day after ~200 miles, the clutch started slipping. So, I’m getting ready to do this job. I’ve got one of the same engine lifts, and a Harbor Freight 1 ton chain-fall that I’ve rigged up to the floor joists in the ceiling above my garage space, to lift the back of the bike. Comes in handy for all sorts of MC service work. Great tip about using the clutch rod and a socket to align the clutch when reassembling. I was looking around trying to find one of the alignment tools, but if that works just as well I’ll just go that way.

With the low prices these bikes command, a bad clutch is enough to write them off. I loved the bricks and boxers I've owned but, boy have they been unreliable and spendy. Called enough a decade ago.

This is why i'll never buy a BMW, you need to dismantle the entire bike for replace the clutch! It's significant more expensive, more work time, more option to something goes wrong, etc ,etc. No, thanks; give me a japanese bike, thanks!

Is it not required to apply black RTV on the gaskets? On the lower surface of the cylinders, near the holes for the head bolts, there is an oil passage in the center - channel (to the timing chain area). When the paper seal is placed it sinks a little into the channel. Is there a need to seal them with RTV? I saw someone on KZbin who does this all the time. Were there no more oil leaks at the end of the process?

I never use RTV sealant. Use the proper type of Hondabond as recommended by Honda.

My 1999 is hands down my favorite distance bike I've ever owned( rockstar for around town as well) I picked her up for 2k with only 21k miles. I should've test ridden her a bit harder and then noticed the license plate frame...SAN FRANCISCO BMW- aaaahhhhh! The original owner "learned" how to ride on this bike, on those hills, for twenty k miles! BMW dealer wants $3500 for replacement( ummm nope). I keep running into the same answer whenever I inquire about a repair: "Well you need a special tool to replace the clutch on this bike". I didn't see or hear you mention anything about a hard-to-find "special tool" in this clip. Is my 99 any different than this 2002?

I've done this, its a lot more involved than the video shows, Torqueing up the swinging arm needs a special tool, It took me on my own about 4 weeks working in the evenings, I'm a machinist not a mechanic. It was the main seal that had gone on mine leaking oil over the clutch. BWW in the UK charge £1800 for this......

Did my clutch at 70,000 when the rear main seal ruined it. It was an experience, not for the timid or inexperienced. My buddy and I were both ex-motorcycle mechanics. My buddy fabricated a harness that we were able to strap the bike to and hoist it in the center section to drop the transmission as needed, it was very useful. Thanks for the video.
@tonycarlos21544 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The hardest part is how to support the bike when you have to remove all the stands. The rest is just straightforward unbolting and keeping track of where all the wires and hoses run. Nothing exotic.

I ride a 1998 B.M.W. K 12 rs, I feel like my clutch is slipping if i open up in 3.4.5. gears, revs go up but takes a second r 2 for rear wheel to react, new clutch was put in only about 4k Miles ago, Have flushed through the Clutch fluid, so that is brand new, and though it has made a differance to the feel of the clutch action, i still feel its slipping. All suggestions greatly appreciated, [all except pull the clutch out of it, lol.] Great Video Thanks Guys.
@10bobj4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the bad news, but if its slipping it will need to be pulled. Unless it is the driveshaft failing which does happen, its a much easier job, I just did one takes about 2-3 hours. The driveshaft isn't cheap, 1025.00 from BMW or take a chance on a used one.

cool for chanching an clutch you have to rip off the whole cycle.HOW SHALL ONE PAY THIS ??any japanese bike hast the clutch changed in one hour.like on my Suzuki TL1000 S...i was interested in this type but when i see this kind of act NO i stay with an motorcycle on wich the clutch can be changed witout ripping away nearly the half of the thing only to change some clutch rings.if an shop does this you will loose 2000 euros on this action so if you buy such an thing for 2000 euros and yopu need new ckutch and can not do it your own...grip an match an lay fire on the thing because ripping it apart to change an clutch will cost more than the thing is worth still.even if the guarnatee the thing will hold 10000 km.in an test it was burned during 30000

Therefore other Things are Mode easy on this bike. And also, you don't have to do this that often. Also it might be an idea to Drill a small drainhole. It might loose some oil in that case BUT the clutch will not slip!

Well, that might have just answered something that has been bugging me for about 6 months now. I have always liked this model of BMW and last year I found one on eBay that seemed to be in my price range. It was being sold as 'spares or repair', and the seller stated if they didn't sell it is, they would break it. They had got the bike in a garage clearance, and the previous owner said it had been parked for about 4 years (warning bells) but didn't know what was wrong with it as it had belonged to her late husband. The bike looked really clean, but some parts had been removed, again reasons unknown (more warning bells). But I thought it might possibly make a nice project. My main concern was - why had it been parked up and parts removed. Watching this video, I think I can see one possible reason. If the clutch had gone, then it may seemed economically unrealistic to repair, especially if they took it to a BMW dealer. I didn't buy the bike, and had been wondering if I had missed out, but now I think I made the right choice. Thanks for the video.
@tonycarlos21544 жыл бұрын
Definitely uneconomical if you are paying factory mechanic rates to do this job. But that fact offers an opportunity. If you can do the job, or pay someone handy to do it, you can buy these great bikes really cheap!
