While the EHB is a great bass to play at any level, I would say that ~$1500 is a lot to spend on a first bass. There are a lot of basses, in the $300-$500 range that would work just as well as, if not better than, this one for learning. If you want to check out other Ibanez basses, the SR line has some really great affordable options for learning (my first bass was a GSR220). Once you learn a little more about what you want in a bass, you can decide to go for something more high end like this one.

Thank you, sir, for this in-depth review! I have a question for you. You said that in your opinion this bass can tonally do pretty much anything. Do you think, by messing with the heights of the pickups, that this bass can be made to sound more like a traditional jazz bass? The “natural” tone of the ehb line of basses is too modern for my tastes, I want something that sounds more oldschool. I actually had an ehb1505 for a few months, sold it because I felt the tone wasn’t for me. But, I love the multiscale and ergonomic features of this bass. Since these pickups have that extra bit of customizability, I’m wondering if this bass may be the ticket for me.
@KeithLewisMusic
@KeithLewisMusic 4 ай бұрын
Hmmmm. It might be possible to get a traditional jazz bass tone out of it, but the pickups are pretty modern sounding, so it would take some real tweaking. They're very reminiscent of the Bartolinis that are in the 1005MS, in that they are very mid rangey, but lack some of the low and high end presence of Jazz pickups, even with the second pickups lowered. You can make up some of the difference with the active EQ, especially with the +6dB mod and the alternate EQ settings you can get by rearranging the wiring on the preamp (it's easy, just pull two plugs and put them in different slots on the board in the rear cavity), but if you're looking for a traditional jazz sound without a ton of tweaking, you're best bet is looking elsewhere or replacing these pickups.

While I can definitely help with piano, I would leave any organ lessons to someone who specializes in that. I know where the notes are, but the mechanics and technique in playing an organ are very different to piano/other keyboard instruments. Shoot me an email at the address in the description if you're interested in talking more about lessons.

Super informative videos! Thanks! Do you know if it´s possible to use tapewounds on these basses??
@KeithLewisMusic
@KeithLewisMusic 9 ай бұрын
Thank you! I've never used tapewounds, so I can't say for sure, but the only issues I can foresee are finding strings that will be appropriate gauges for all six strings, and making sure that they are designed for the 35" scale on the low B string. I don't know any six string players that use tapewounds, so there may not be enough demand for anyone to make a set.

Please note, I found some industrial strength Velcro that would work. It will NOT MOVE! Also, I saw some other videos that showed attaching the rear straplock to a lower position on the body in order to allow less wrist bend. AND, they do sell pearl type dots that you can glue on the fret board for greater fret identification. They worked great on my Warwick bass! Great video! BTW, I just bought the 5 string Ibanez version! Thanks Keith!

Great review !!! I have this exact bass, and YES !!!!! WHAT IS UP WITH THE DOTS ????? You can't see them in ANY low light situation !!! I put white out on them and it rubs off. I'm not sure if I'm going to do it or not, but I might drill small holes and put white out in there...lol I have to do something. We play lots of clubs and near half the time I can't see any of the dots. I'm an experienced player, but if I'm doing flashy or solo stuff, geeez.....it's easy to lose your place. That's my main gripe other then I wish the pickups were straight up and down. Plucking in a different style is how I play now. I play way up near the neck instead of by the bridge. My thumb is going to rub off that Ibanez logo soon too that's right above the neck...lol Honesty... I almost sent the bass back because it felt so uncomfortable at first. I'm really happy I fought through and finally came up with a technique that I'm comfortable with !!! I love this bass now !!! I had 2 back surgeries, so the weight of this bass was the reason I wanted it so bad, and it sounds SO GOOD !!!! The amount of different tones is just amazing !!!!! Also, a bass this short, fits on any airplane overhead bin !!!! NEVER EVER giving them my bass to "PUT UNDER THE PLANE" ✈️😭😔😡😖😠😡😡😡 They damaged one years ago and you can't do anything about it !!! Anywho....lol Other then those few issues though, I totally agree with everything you said !!! Great review and nice playing !!! Thanks !!! :-)

Yes! Thanks to a helpful comment by g-man, I added a second strap button about an inch above the output jack which has totally resolved the issue. It pulls the bottom of the body in, instead of the top and the bass hangs flat instead of tilted. Check out their comment for a link to a helpful video.

Hey, a pro tip for the ramp attachment is to use two pieces of painter's tape and a few drops of super glue. I have an Ibanez ehb 6 string as well and it’s lock tight now. Just cut a piece of painter's tape and place it on the guitar between the pickups and place the other piece of tape on the bottom of the ramp. Put a few drops of super glue on one of the pieces of tape and then place the ramp in your desired position. Once it dries it's secured and the benefit is you don’t have to drill through anything and most importantly you can remove it without any damage or residue on the guitar.

Hello Keith. Good review! I would suggest adding another strap button on the other side of the bridge. This will make the bass hang at a much better angle. Status Graphite have done this on their basses for years, and it makes a huge difference.

Do you think this would make for a good first 6 string for a primarily 5 string player?
@KeithLewisMusic
@KeithLewisMusic Жыл бұрын
I would call this a "Try before you buy" situation. The stretch to the B string on a 6-string is significant enough, and the body carve and multiscale frets on this bass make it even farther. I've been playing six strings for 15 years and it's still taking me some time to get used to the additional stretch. Between that and the QC issues I found, I would recommend ordering it through a guitar store and having it shipped there. That way, if you don't like it, they can return it for you. Beyond that, it's an incredible instrument, especially for the price.

I actually bought this bass back in Dec as my 1st 6-String and have to say, it was a pretty easy transition...Something about the neck is super comfortable and reminiscent of a 5 string...not quite the aircraft carrier vibe from other 6-strings I've tried. I do agree that with the upper frets/lower notes, there is a little fatigue, but as Keith mentioned, it's more of the angle of the bass, which can be fixed. Another video touches on how comfortable it is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYTUaXdsZ9eppsk Keith, great review! It was like you were reading my mind! 😆 But yeah, I'm loving this thing across the board.

Timeless groove! Hey I'm just curious about the 6 strings, I've played 4 then went to 5 then both which was really hard, then I just lost my spacing for 5 so back to 4. So are you a guitarist too? And did go straight to 6? And can someone tell me how not to play so hard, I'm on year 6 and I have to ice my fret fingers almost every time, I don't practice 14 hrs a day anymore, my action is very low, tried strings of all sorts, my best so far were Ernie Ball half round and I was told that was the cause. Because you look so smooth it doesn't even look like you are playing! I just played this song a few days ago, well tried to when I watch you 👍
@KeithLewisMusic
@KeithLewisMusic Жыл бұрын
Hey! While I do play guitar as well, I am definitely a bassist first, and I bought my first six string bass long before I picked up guitar. I started on four strings, but I switched to six strings for a few reasons. I could read sheet music, so I was being asked to play a lot of gigs that involved reading, but being new to bass meant that I wasn't very good at moving up and down the neck, and the six string allowed me to play more notes in one position without having to take my eyes off the music to look at my hands. I also got involved in some instrumental trios where playing chords was very helpful to fill out the sound, and the thinner gauge of the C string helps to keep the tone from getting muddy with more notes. I also just came to like the feel of a wide neck and the narrower string spacing over time. I still play a four string in some contexts, but I mostly play my sixes these days. As for the left hand stress, without being able to see you play, it's hard to comment, but if your action is already nice and low, I'd guess that you are just gripping much harder than you need to. Make sure that your thumb is behind the neck, with the pad roughly opposite where your first finger is. Your palm should be nice and low, and not touching the neck. Try to keep your fingers parallel to the frets, and press the strings with the tip, not the pad of your fingers. Do your best to keep your fingers in a fairly relaxed curve, and don't let any joints invert when you press down. That's the best general advice I can give without actually look at your technique.
