Thanks for the video. So you zero xy at the center but really you just get it kind of close to the center of your stock as long as the part will still stay inside of the stock right?
@FineLineJoineryАй бұрын
That is correct. Note, however, that I changed my XY datum to the lower left corner when I started toolpathing, because that's how I will probe my material when setting up to mill. Just remember not to move any path vectors after copying them to the other side! Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Trying that now. I have been STRUGGLING with two sided machining. I've used the 4 pins (symmetrical) and cut through once, then turned. But it would always mismatch by about 1/16" between two sides. I need a perfect match because I am milling parts. Will try your method now. hoping it works.

@@FineLineJoinery if you could make a video on hot to create a jig for two sided machining - it would be awesome. I always have either 6x6” or 4x6” precisely cut material. And I need to cut at scale. 100-200 a month. So three holes is a good solution but not scalable

I wish someone would offer 3D modeled gears. I think this is a well-engineered project. Cutting and sanding this out with an SO is a real time commitment. A more durable material than wood, would be my preference. I think it would hold up better over time. Anyways great job.
@FineLineJoinery4 ай бұрын
A time commitment it is for sure. I've avoided trying out 3D printing because I can imagine the piles of plastic trash I would make. As far as durability, I don't think the actual wear on these wooden gears is anything to worry about. I know I'm no youngster, but I'm confident the gears will outlast me. They only experience a dozen or so low speed revolutions each time it's used. Thanks for watching and your comments!

i like the idea of a portable option, but the weight of that thing must be substantial... are there any assists that might help a small shop make the most of this machine?
@FineLineJoinery5 ай бұрын
The specs say 18 lbs, but it doesn't feel heavy while using. Once you start banding, the weight is mostly on the workpiece. They do have a small table available so it can be used as a benchtop tool. I've though about making one myself, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Follow the link in the description to Shop Gear to see the accessories available. One more question, did you finish your final top with shallac or something similar to keep the tape from getting scuffed or lifting up? I was thinking a spray-on product.
@FineLineJoinery6 ай бұрын
No, never bothered worrying about that. Only the tape that's near the edge next to your workpiece ever gets wear from the Origin riding over it. When Origin tells me it's not reading 3 or 4 dominos, I cut out and replace that section and re-scan. Good luck!
@DavidGunter6 ай бұрын
It seems you still have to add tape to the parts you are cutting. Why is that?
@FineLineJoinery6 ай бұрын
Origins "eyes" (onboard camera) can only see about 10" or so (I think...) in front of it. When cutting larger parts that require moving it further from the tape board than that, you need to add more tape within Origin's vision range. I always move origin around the cutting area before actually starting to cut. There's an indicator on screen that lets you know whether there's enough tape for Origin to track properly. When there's not, I just add another strip and "add to scan". Thanks for watching the vid and your comment!
@DavidGunter6 ай бұрын
@@FineLineJoinery I assumed it was that. At least one uses less tape overall. I can't wait to get started on this one.

i not understand all but good learn and looking how this make, i need make my first cnc job, spoilboard cutting, many holes, and need other side cutting ewery holes position pocket, 3mm/0,25" deep 22mm/3/4" MDF. but my problem have how i make position right bottom side, because top side have as-symmetric, left side and down side need stay first 20mm/3/4" about fence area and then all board cutting 2" x 2" grid 1/4" 6mm holes. then need change board bottom side and cut ewery 1/4" hole position pocket Diam 3/4" 1/4" deep. i not understand how i adjust board bottom side have sure same all holes than top side has.
@FineLineJoinery6 ай бұрын
I would suggest not worrying about the perfect spoilboard yet. Just screw down a scrap of MDF big enough to do some learning projects on. Use some good double-stick tape to fasten your workpiece and you should be good to go. Follow along with the video and the 2-sided indexing should make a lot more sense. Thank you for watching and good luck on your journey!

Great video!! I was in the process of creating a tape board when I found your video. I downloaded the files from the Shaper Hub (thanks!!). In the Instructions on the Shaper Hub you state "Updated: Just added an alternate file (alternate-nested gears(G2x1+G3x4).svg)". I don't see this file, have I overlooked something" How important is the height of the tape board in relationship to the tape board? I thought that the tape was just for reference and the height of the two (within reason) was not an issue.
@FineLineJoinery6 ай бұрын
On the "Files Included" list, did you click on "See More" underneath? The nested gears file should be at the bottom. Ideally, the tape board should be dead flush with your workpiece. Origin's camera is at an angle to the tape board and is calculating its position relative to the tape based on that assumption. At least that's my understanding... Thanks for watching the video and good luck with your tape board! Come back and let me know how it turns out.

This is a brilliant solution to a problem just about every Shaper Origin owner has. I've been thinking about how to make a height-adjustable tape board for some time, and I have some ideas that I think would work, but I really like your design. It looks like it would be super easy to use, versus my ideas that would require adjusting four "legs" to the correct height individually. Thanks for sharing your design - subscribed!
