I have a 1995 dodge ram 5.9l magnum and I have a similar noise. how did you find out it was a collapsed lifter? was there extra play at one of the rockers?
@DubiusTheWolf2 жыл бұрын
I had the intake off to replace the plenum pan gasket, that's when I realised the cam damage and spotted the bad lifter. If you got a clicky clacky noise like this that seems to be coming from the valve cover, I recomment you use some oil additive to help clean up the internals and maybe get the stuck lifter unstuck and if that doesn't help I'd just replace all 16 lifters before it's too late and further demage will be the result in other parts of your valve train. If the noise seems to be coming from the front of your engine, check your timing chain and gears for wear and or play.

@@DubiusTheWolf well last night I removed the valve covers to check for extra play in the rockers and the side that I’ve never messed with had no extra play, but the other side is one where I had to remove the rockers once and those rockers all had extra play, and when I wiggled one of the rockers it made that exact sound “PACKA PACKA PACKA” so I think I found the source of the sound I hope i can correct it with tightening the rocker bolts
@DubiusTheWolf2 жыл бұрын
Just for all of you who're wondering like I was: it turned out to be a stuck lifter! I wish I wasn't young and dumb and woulda been able to identify and fix it right away, because this lifter's been bad for so many many miles it actually ruined my cam by beating the crap outta that one lobe over the time. Take care of your stuff guys and replace broken parts straight away, it'll surely pay off in the long run. Just.. don't be me. xp

Not really, why'd you think so? These motors have just never been good cold starters
@HeinerStorch2 жыл бұрын
@@DubiusTheWolf From my personal experience, all the diesels I started, needed one or two attempts to crank, even at -10°C, as long as they are in a standard state ( acceptable compression, no broken rings or blown head gaskets, chain not stretched, timing ok, no leaks in diesel- line, glow plugs in good working order, etc etc.)
@DubiusTheWolf2 жыл бұрын
@@HeinerStorch to be honest I don't remember the temp, but I think is must have been somewhere around 5 or 7 degree Celsius. Also I don't remember which engine this one being started in the video is - the one that was in there when we bought it got treated horribly by the previous owner and died sooner rather than later, it was worn out to no end and the main bearings were like literally gone, it spun pretty much all of them It got replaced with the exact same engine. But I dunno which one of these it is that you see in these videos. All I remember is that the "new" one (used engine as well but in good condition) was just as horrible of a starter and moody as heck at it just like the old one. I'm really not a Mercedes guy and don't know much about the LR either, it used to be mum's just for fun Sunday ride and my stepfather used to take care of it so I never really been involved much. Are you a Mercedes guy? Got experiences with these engines (OM617 I Think) or are you a LR guy? Btw starting these Mercedes 5 cyl engines always was a bizzare thing to me, it even needed cycling the glow plugs in 25 degree weather and also when it was already semi warm after some driving. My Powerstroke started in like 5 degree weather with no issues without glow plugs at all from what I remember
@oilstovesandmore2 жыл бұрын
@@DubiusTheWolf nonsense. The 300.diesels are good starters. There is something wrong with yours. And you have to press the gaspedal and hold it when you start a cold diesel. If it starts release the pedal. Are your glowplugs all.okay?. looks like your fuel drops back to your tank also.

I’m guessing a 2 x 4 transmission as he never gets out of 4th and he’s going pretty fast. He drives like he would go for 5th and 6th if he could. He would fail a Commercial Driving Test as soon as he let out the clutch, if not before. The truck would fail too. No seat belt. The Unimog has a bad air leak, air booster over hydraulics brakes. (red warning light). He starts driving with low air pressure, it builds up and drops again with red warning. Aggressive driver, especially near the couple with the child cart and the dog walkers. Never two hands on the wheel. Driving too fast on narrow winding road where people are out for a walk. Really poor form and scary! Experience? 16 years plowing and dirt work, 3-MB 4/94 (406) Unimogs in Alaska. Never called a tow truck, never a damage claim. Slow down and be careful.
@DubiusTheWolf3 жыл бұрын
Well sorry to tell you're wrong, but it's a 6 speed. And well, sorry to disappoint you again but I do have a CDL and everything else it takes to truck for a living and that's what I'm doing day day out. I dunno about Alaska so I'm not gonna judge that, but in this area I'm actually one of the slowest, most patient, careful and "friendly" driver you'll find. But yeah, you're right about one thing: it does have a problem with the air system. It's not really a leak tho, it's a bad pressure regulator. Anyways, thank you for your concern.

@pete3324 жыл бұрын
at 5:02 he says he's in 4x4. All vehicles are light in the back-end. If your worried about sliding or traction, throw some weight back there. Makes a huge difference. I drive a F150 4x4 and throw about 200 Ibs in the bed to stabilize her. Most times I don't even need 4x4 because of the added traction.
@DubiusTheWolf4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure I had her in 4wd cuz pretty much anything unloaded that's rwd handles horribly and has horrible traction in snow no matter what tires you got on em My E350 is the worst cuz it's got the heavy 7.3 diesel weighing down the front end and there's literally no weight on the rear end I think she's got like 1 ton on the rear wheels and about 1.8 on the front when empty and that means you're stuck as soon as your front wheels hit a somewhat sunk in culvet or man hole xD When I was towin a trailer with a lot of tongue weight she made it up and down them mountain roads safely and wonderfully trouble free with lots of snow, it's not only up to to em tires but also weight on the drive axle as well as weight distribution between your dead and drive axle

Do they all knock at idle ?
@DubiusTheWolf2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 7.3 PowerStroke is rather knocky at idle - although you might still wanna pay attention to the sound of the thing idling every now and then. When there's what sounds like a knock from one single cylinder, like a bad rod bearing or something, it's most likely cylinder number 8 and it's usually either fuel pressure or cam sensor related. When it sounds rather irregular at idle in general, like.. when the sound changes a little some from second to second, it might indicate something being wrong with your hight pressure oil system, maybe the ICP or IPR not working correctly, Mine was doing that when the IPR wiring harness was going bad and shorting out, leaving the IPR unable to work properly. Was sounding goofy at idle and lacking torque and power a little some, no codes though however, till it died completely. If it has a sharp constant knock to it at itle, it is most likely just low fuel pressure at idle. It tends to put injection timing a little sharper when starving of fuel and cause it to knock like an old Actros.

I used to park my series on a hill with a 300 foot straight to get her started when it was well below freezing. If I used the glow plugs the battery wouldn't be strong enough to keep the starter motor rolling. Procedure was to engage second gear, activate glow plugs for roughly 15 seconds, depress the clutch while holding the glow plugs on for about 10 seconds until the car was doing about 15 mph and dumping the clutch. At this point I'd start praying the engine would catch on before I ran out of hill. Once she was running I'd drive up the hill and leave it running while I finished my breakfast.
