My MC16 would start on both cylinders first kick, and rev perfect on the stand. On the road a different story, misfiring, cylinders in and out, really bad. I cut the backs off the CDI's looking for dry joints, tried everything. Bought two new units, Lixianda or some such name. Hey presto it worked for about 2 weeks, then failed again. I finished up buying Ignitech from Czech Republic, now it works on both reliably. I recommend those people, of course its not original. I care more it works. Carburetors yet another nightmare. Much better now, after so much time. I feel they must have been on and off 1000 times!

About your 1 cilinder issue. I have an MC16 myself. Drove it al lot of years an nog it is also under a technical restauration. The 1 cilinder problem is maybe coused by the choke, that works on only 1 cilinder. Or, the oillevel sensor in the 2stoke oiltank. The sensor loses magnetism and gives a low-oillevel signal tot the CDI, that cuts te ignition on 1 cilinder. At first above 6000rpm but it accurs more often during time.

No problem glad it was useful. If you mean the white spongy tape…. ? The brand I use is J-tape (foam edge tape) I will get the part number on Monday. Any automotive painters foam edge tape will do though. Cheers

12:00 Just want to say that for any fittings that are not specifically noted, there is a "standard" torque setting at the bottom of page 1-18 of the NSR250R Service Manual. The value for the front sprocket screws is therefore 0.7-1.1kg-m (6.8-10.7N-m).

Damien, Good choice to now use DOT 5 in the brakes as all the lines and calipers, cylinders will have had all the traces of DOT 4 or whatever FULLY removed. Put non DOT 5 in the Z as it is all i have on my 3 bikes so was soooo careful with the caliper reassembly. Never used the Hellerine oil on the rubber bits, in fact never even heard of it, have always used Castrol Red Rubber Grease on rubber to make things easier to fit. Does the Hellerine leave any protection after it has evaporated off? Anyway another fantastic insight and good techniques. Hope you remembered to wind off the torque wrench after use?

Excellent attention to detail Damien. I will retire my bolster chisel and use a spreader from now on. Only ever had one issue with paint cracking when doing up bolts on a disc, most of the time the paint is still soft when thing go back together, but warming the paint tip is good for all situation like this, many thanks. Though you may have used some loctite on the disc bolts, assume the factory did not use it on this bike. got a cup of tea ready and will watch the other vids.

Which degreaser do you use in the parts washer? I was under the impression that only brake cleaner is allowed on the inside of the calipers(behind the pistons), because degreasers could corrode aluminum. Asking because I just bought a parts washer and I find this subject a bit controversial. Great job.
@robbateman7987

Good point, The way I do mine is with paraffin (kerosene) or diesel to clean the heavy stuff off. Then finish off with Bilt Hamber Sufex HD at 10%. most other mild degreasers should be ok if you very well rinse the parts immediately and dry off (air line and or hair drier) Pay particular attention to the seal grooves. Hope this helps

Sorry for the delay. I use water based degreaser in my parts washer because I’m using it in a body shop setting my insurance wont allow me to use solvent based. If they are really in a bad state I will use solvent degreaser or paraffin, at home of course🙄. Iv never had any issues.

We had the same cdi issue with my mates bike. Not long after doing some tests the 2nd one went. After a bit research i found out the cdi from the xlr 650 (i think) was a direct fit. He ordered 2 new aftermarket ones from hi level i think and job was a good un! Im currently restoring an mc16 as well just now and iv got to say, very impressed with the job you done on your from discs! 👍🏻

You are a perfectionist in your work who takes pride in what you do , almost OCD level ,which in your work of restoration seems to be advantageous. Your attention to detail is mind boggling,I saw your brake restoration and paint I wish you could do my Kawasaki Versys brakes lol. In no way any criticism but you could use clear or colour match plastic washers or even tiny rubber grommets for screws so just to spread pressure on the plastic. Also you could try contact electrical grease ,I think it’s lithium based to stop corrosion. As I said your work is above mainstream so no criticism ment. Well done

Hi from New Zealand Damien. I never thought I would see a MC16 in this condition! Gives me great motivation and hope as I have an identical model bike in original condition (complete and running) that I am also looking to restore. Could you please share/help: Your methods on cleaning and restoring aluminum components like the frame, footpegs and also the engine to the condition you have achieved here? The model of motorcycle you got the switch block casings from? Do you have any ideas/methods on repairing cracked fairings on this model? Have subscribed and will be following this journey very closely. Mitchell

Hi Mitchell, thanks for subscribing. I will be doing a video on repairing body work in the very near future as well as a video on how I clean all my components etc so please keep watching! the switch block casings are from a cbr600f hurricane 1988-1990 I found them at a company called CMS I had to remove the start button and a few wires etc but the cases are the same. Hope this helps.
