Toby Stephens is a British actor. He played the main villain in Die Another Day James Bond film with Hallie Berry

Philip Marlowe was a complete stranger to me when I opened The Lady in the Lake more than 50 years ago. I don't know how many times I've read it since, but I've read every Marlowe novel and short story more than twice. His voice in this video is just about the way I imagined it when I was reading the book for the first time. The Lady in the Lake wasn't just my introduction to Chandler, it was the beginning of a lifelong love of prose noir. The next book I read after that one was Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man. Since then I've read and reread all of Hammett's novels just as many times as Chandler's. From there I branched out into Jim Thompson, James M Caine and Loren D Estleman. It's been a long and rewarding journey. Edit: for anyone who loves this stuff I strongly recommend Raymond Chandler Speaking, a compilation of his correspondence. His thoughts on writing, writers, literature and cats make for a damn fine read.

Superb, love Toby Stephens as Marlowe. Radio Noir at its best.

To my taste that's a good thing. the movie disappointed me. The best way to get this story is by reading the book. There's a lot missing in this drama but it's still more true to Chandler than the movie.

Watched the movie with George Montgomery the other day. Great movie, but I prefer this medium. Toby Stephens did a remarkable job on every one of these! Would really enjoy seeing it on a screen. JJ -South Alabama

Thanks so much. these radio plays are great. The actor playing Marlowe has the character down to a T. the direction is perfect, too. the show really feels like the ‘30’s and ‘40’s. just one thing, with all the times he gets hit on the head, i’m amazed it stills works 😂🌴☀️

Listened to this many many times over the years and it's still a great drama, Raymond Chandler is/was author to this day.

My favorite novelist. Listen to the books if you can find then, sometimes you can on youtube. Most of his 6 major Marlow novels are pretty complex, except for Lady in the Lake I would say. But still I like Lady in the Lake as much as any of them. The abridged version fails though, because it minimized the role of the constable. He is one of the major shining points of that novel.

Thanks for these. I listen to a ton of audio books but tend to not enjoy many of the dramatized works; however, these are well done with excellent actors as well as crisp and spare sound effects. Great pacing too. The old time radio recordings are so frenetic and the quality, well, it is what it is.
