Interesting! I didn't expect you could tow yourself uphill with a kite on skis! Did you need a ton of wind to do it? I'm intrigued by the potential applications!

Uphill with a kite is no problem and doesn't need a ton of wind, just a good balance between kite size and wind.

Hey mate, how good are half straps?
@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
I think they're great. They help to manage the board in light wind when you're getting started. Once you're up it's like riding strapless. I moved them both forward to make a windsurfing style set up in the front and put a normal foot strap on the back. I did this because my riding style changed a bit and it was better for practicing foot switches.

Very much inspiring your self launch technic. I dreamed many times about that and you show us, how it works! Thanks very much for sharing your experience! I really wonder, how you get the kite back on the board, especially if the wind is still going well. Is there a technic you can do on your own? Backstalling the kite, then pull it in on a steering line? Best regards Sandro
@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Sorry it took a while to get back to you. When I finish this kind of session and there is no landing spot, I bring the kite down close to the water on the edge of the wind window and flag it out. Then I sit on the board if I'm in open water and bring the kite to me by winding up the lines on the bar. Then I let the air out of the kite and roll it up. Watch my foil kite self rescue video and it basically shows what I do. Other times I can come in and stand on a shallow spot and do the same. That's a bit easier than sitting on the board in deep water.

@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. The Ozone Hyperlink V2 is made of really light material that is also basically waterproof. It will fly in almost as little wind as a single skin kite. At such low speeds you can't really foil but it's nice to have a chance at keeping it in the air while you're waiting for a bit more wind.

Nice vid! Why do you use hooks instead of regular straps?
@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
Trying to avoid injury. I'm 60 years old and have one artificial hip. At my age I'm trying to balance my fun with safety differently than when I was 25. I've changed the configuration of the straps since that video. Now I have two foot hooks forward in a windsurf configuration and if the wind is super light I add a regular foot strap in the back just for making the water start easier. I find the hooks in the front in a windsurfing config makes working on foot switches better.

It's been a long time since your last video, super happy to see a new one! :) P.S. I had similar issues while attempting a water launch - lines would get tangled around the floater and pretty soon, it would become unwieldy and I would just try to quickly unwrap them, as you did in the video. But now I am getting a feeling that keeping that tension in the lines is pretty important in low wind situations - kinda like you did in the first video - to keep the tension and with that, keep the kite above the water and slightly filled. Am I understanding that right?
@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. Glad you're happy with more content. I have some ideas for more videos but just haven't taken the time yet. Want to get some stuff out on my experience learning to wing including on the ice and some light wind snow kiting tips. I agree with your tension on the lines comments, but in the stronger winds, the tension is so high I think that is part of the problem. With less tension you can more easily move the bar in a fluid motion that keeps the lines away from the floats. With high tension that becomes very difficult. In the future I will try to inflate the kite less in stronger winds to try to keep the tension less. But I don't really have a clear solution until I try it out.

Great video. I like you commentary. If you are still monitoring this, I'm curious, why did you not try to stay on the boat to launch the kite?
@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was thinking it was best to be a little away from the boat as the kite would be in the wind shadow of the boat. Also, I was well set up for the return to the boat to be able to hook up the kite and board so I could climb up into the boat and the retrieve them.

Hello. Why do you need to use this method? Do you not have a spot to launch on land?
@snowandfoilkiting8637 Жыл бұрын
It's for spots that don't have a useable launch spot. It can open up new areas and wind directions. I would rather use a beach, but sometimes there isn't one.
@claudegosselin42162 жыл бұрын
I have been using a 10$ table fan for years - I simply direct it to the central air intake and let time do its job. Ideally, the kite is on its extrados and you can fully extend it; for a 12 or 15 m kite, usually 8H are sufficient to get it all dry in / out; the Velcro vents must be opened to allow air to circulate, and you must make sure the wing tip water escapes are not closed. To take your kite out of the water, what works well is to start with the leading edge and progressively send the water to the trailing edge where it can escape from the air vent and wing tips; of course, if there are rocks where you take the kite out of the water, you may want help to prevent the fabric from scraping on the hard edges of the rocks. If the kite is full of water, it becomes very heavy and you do not want to lift it without support - otherwise the fabric and stitches may stretch.

I have had the same thing with the floats. I have tried to to wrap the lines differently and it can still happen. It’s a 50 /50 if things will go good or bad. I made a float table that anchors to the bottom and then I can side launch from the water. It’s a round disk made of wood with a float around the edge. Then I see the kite with sand bag on the wing tip. It works pretty good but you need to be able to stand in the water it won’t work for deep water.

@snowandfoilkiting86372 жыл бұрын
Thank you. My board is about 20 liters. I still fall off sometimes while sitting on it but it goes pretty good. I imagine more volume in it would make it less stable to sit on rather than more. I'm a little under 100 kg by the way.
@bondvillansarebest2 жыл бұрын
Any thoughts on how you might avoid the floater getting tangled? Would a complete wrap of the bar end on each side at the beginning of the winding process prevent them from getting in the way? That seems like the type of process that might still be manageable in a water launch?
@snowandfoilkiting86372 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'm not sure. Maybe a clever way of angling the bar as you let the lines out would work. I do think it's the extra pressure with stronger winds that starts things going wrong. When there is less pressure it's easy to straighten out any small problems as you go.

One stupid question: Why it is important to dry it? I was able to relaunch the hyperlink at the beach when it was completely wet. Then I started riding again and it didn´t feel different? But I am a beginner at foilkites, so maybe it tends to fall off the sky more if it´s wet? Thanks!
@snowandfoilkiting86372 жыл бұрын
Hi. The drying is for the longevity of the kite. It's not good for the material to be stored wet. So it really isn't about the flying, just taking care of it.

Very good vid. Any chance of a similar vid dealing with self rescue when using a pump up kite? JK
@snowandfoilkiting86373 жыл бұрын
Probably not since I haven't used my pump up kites since I went over to foils. But if I was self rescuing while foiling with a pump up kite, I think I would basically do the same. Get the air out of the kite, roll it up, and bungee it to the board. At least if there was no wind. With wind that was of any help, I would tether the board to me like in the video, but use the kite as a sail to assist in getting in. Glad you like the video.
@vinny613893 жыл бұрын
Not a foil rider but I found this super helpful. Just had my leading edge blow out which made most self rescue videos pretty lackluster in terms of relevance. I really like the idea of a tether and bungies to hold everything together. This has given me a lot to think about going forward. Thank you for putting this together! Hopefully more folks can see it and discuss.
@snowandfoilkiting86373 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. The whole idea behind these videos is to help, so I'm glad to hear you found it helpful. Since foiling opens up getting out on the water in much less wind, you do end up swimming sometimes since it's possible to be out right on the edge of foiling at 15 knots and swimming at 0.5 knots.

I use a battery powered leaf blower. Very high volume, it will inflate the kite in 1mn. Leave on the grass in the sun and dries pretty fast.
@snowandfoilkiting86373 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the kite material. The more water tight it is the harder it is for the moisture to escape. That's why I like to circulate air through and not just inflate it. Plus the sun is a factor that makes the kite's life shorter. But there are lots of ways to do this. Thanks for the feedback.
