Not many steel players would tune their pedals on the fly mid-song. But Paul isn't your average player.

After Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel took the stage, he and the Time Jumpers performed “Route 66” and “South Of The Border (Down Mexico Way)”. Vince Gill was gracious in letting that curly old wolf Ray Benson get behind the microphone and sing some tunes. Don’t know of many country legends who would do that, giving the stage to a Western swing icon. Hope Ray Benson got around to writing that autobiography. It’s been six years. And by the way, Vince Gill entrusted Ray Benson with his red guitar.

I attended a show in Humboldt County, Ca about 30 years ago featuring AATW and Riders in the Sky. The Riders opened. Between the shows, the local soundman turned the two bands on to that special California blend of potent agricultural product. About halfway through the AATW performance, Ray Benson starts really getting out there with his guitar solos and his band is all staring at him. He starts laughing uproariously, ends the song and out of nowhere invites the members of the Riders in the Sky on stage to finish the night with the band, At this point, Ranger Doug pretty much takes over the night with his brand of humor and western songs keeping everything intact. Speaking with the soundman afterward he said Ranger Doug imbibed in the magical Humboldt Homegrown more than anyone!

Bill Kirchen also mentions meeting Naomi Judd when she was a waitress and her aspirations- it's just possible Bill was touring with AATW at the same time. The rest is history! South of the Border- a song written in Britain just before WW2 inspired by a postcard from Tijuana! Perhaps, Ray can do another of Jimmy Kennedy's songs- Red Sails In The Sunset!

People walking? Poor audio? Who cares? It's just a cheap Sony handicam shooting from about 25 feet away. Not trying to make professional recordings over here. You don't like it? Come to Nashville and make your own version.

Pure soulful emotion, and Paul Franklin acknowledges. 1:00. Wonderful solos begin 2:41. Mr. Gill seems to smile and gaze at the guitar as though it were a baby in his arms. 3:16.
