I have a p pump 4bta in a 1963 C10 truck with a Chevy nv4500. I’ve done the AFC mods and cut the fuel plate to a 0 profile. Also have adjustable boost elbow and Mack rack plug. Stock HX30 turned up to 28psi of boost. My little tower of power is probably making 200-220hp and 500-550tq. Watch dyno videos on what they do just on 30 psi. Stock the Cummins 4bt is 120hp and 300tq. Because i know to get my 4bta to 300hp I need to install an HX35 turbo which I already have. And a governor spring kit which I already have also. I’ll need bigger delivery valves and injectors which are cheap. Then the 80lb heavy duty valve springs to not float the valves around 3000rpm. Stock redline is 2500rpm but the b series Cummins engines can take 5000rpm with those mods. I’ve heard the 6bta with mods rev to 4K-5k rpm and they sound wicked. The little 4 cylinder Cummins can make over 400hp but I doubt this guy in the video knows any of the stuff needed to do it. Also the killer dowel pin mod. And if you go over 45psi of turbo boost you have to take the head off and replace the head gasket with machined copper rings and upgraded head studs. As someone that owns 2 of these engines I’ve done the research.

My 1963 Chevy C10 truck with p pump Cummins 3.9 liter 4bt with nv4500 broke the clutch friction plate center hub in 3rd gear when the turbo spooled. And it’s the Chevy 12in heavy duty clutch they use for the 454ci v8 and the clutch is rated for like 400-450tq. Clearly my little 3.9 liter 4 cylinder Cummins with mods in a LIGHTWEIGHT Chevy 1/2 ton truck far exceeds that rating. The little Cummins engine also broke the original 10 bolt rear axle with 3.73 gears so I had an axle shop swap a Ford 9 inch rear axle with 3.25 gears. I’ve also had to put Chevy corvette Z06 motor mounts under the engine because it will break normal ones. Now instead of breaking motor mounts it just twists the frame a bit on boost. And my engine is only around 200-220hp 500-550tq from the stock 120hp 300tq. I highly call bs on the 300hp claim in video.

Chevy 454ci v8 only makes around 400 foot pounds of torque. The little 235ci 3.9 liter Cummins 4bt makes 500 foot pounds of torque when modded to put out just 200hp.

I bought one new in 85, never had a problem, but I always ran synthetic. From what I was told there was a timing chain guide wear problem on them, use good oil and replace the oil a lot. Its cheap insurance.

I just did a frame up restoration on a 1985 xr250r. Mine is dual carb and I thought the 350's were too (2x26mm keihin carbs) Anyways those bikes look very well preserved and I'd love to add the first one to my collection if I lived closer.

Ive got one too, same year exact same but mine is a little more modified for road (tagged it here in CT). Street tires, signals, rear view mirror etc. Also, and this is partly a question the PO of my bike put a larger sprocket on so the gears weren’t as “short” for easier road riding but I’m thinking of putting the original back on. Mostly bc I want to pop wheelies too haha, but I’ wondering if by doing that the PO compromised the engine in some way..IDk, maybe you had a thought on that if possible. Mine needs some minor attention right now, like the Decomp cable that returns up from the kickstarter, that broke off. I bought it like that 6 months ago so your video gave me a better idea on starting. Mine starts 1 or two kicks as well even with that broken cable but it’s getting fixed now. Do you think that would effect anything as far as power or compression when riding? Or is it strictly for starting etc? I don’t really understand what that truly does. My bike is also leaking some oil right at the level of the exhaust out take on the shifting side, def coming from engine though not exhaust intake is that where the head gasket is basically? You seem like you know your bikes really well, if I wasn’t on the East Coast I’d think about getting another one from you. Sorry for the long post, but at 44 and it being my first motorcycle I’m trying to learn a bit and since it’s 35 years old it is hard to find ANYONE who knows anything about them! Thanks, Marc
