As a kid growing up in Brooklyn,I would spend my Sundays going to the 9th Regiment Armory on 14th Street. I watched the NewYork Chiefs in action.What an unforgettable thrill it was .to watch Mike Gammon and his mother,Gerry Murray, work their "magic"..I was so fortunate to have seen Joan Weston,Charlie O'Connell,Hal Janowitz,Bert Wall,"Spec" Saunders, Bobbie Mateer,Jeannie Porter and one of my great favorites,Annis Jenson, What a golden time for this great game.

My brother and I worshiped Charlie O. I’m 63 and my brother is 68 years old, and we both clearly remember the (Death) Match Race between Charlie and Bob Woodberry at the Oakland Colosseum. They tore it up in a sold out venue!!! We also Remember Charlie and Tony Roman scoring over 75 points in an evening. Awesome memories, awesome times! Charlie was a great roll model for us as kids. We played derby in a two plus car garage with our friends. My brother would be Charlie O (cause he was bigger) and I would be Tony Roman. And we would skate and brawl to emulate our hero....#40 Charlie O’Connell... God rest his soul.

@@kenprice1961 Hi Ken! I’ll bet you feel a little taller today. Guess I would too after trying to shit on some old guys childhood memories. Thanks for taking the time to show us all how small you really are. Sorry your life was so rotten to have created the likes of you. I’ll crack out my tiny violin and play; “whoa as me” just for you.

I am an Oregonian and I love the history of the Roller Derby. My grandparents loved the Roller Derby. The Roller Derby game of today is barely watchable. Some will disagree with my assessment. The games Charlie O played in were entertaining and fun to watch! I will never forget the excitement my grandmother had in seeing the Bombers skate against Ann Calvello and her team the Pioneers when they came to Olympia, Washington in the early 70’s. Interesting interview about a bigger than life character! And yes I was a skater- roller, in-line and ice skating!

When I was in my teens I remember games at the Oakland Coliseum section 120 Row Q the seats my dad always purchased for every game played there . And I remember at least one time outside in the stadium they played and had a fireworks show after the 4th of July game . early or mid 1970's. .

Oh Charlie did had his own set of opponents who wouldn't back down from him. As mentioned Bob Woodberry. Ken Monte. Dave Pound. Even Leroy Gonzalez. More notable for me...John Parker. I only heard of Dave Pound & Leroy Gonzalez. Seen John Parker gave my favorite Charlie O' a workout. Admitting I thought it was far worse then Woodberry or Monte!
@georgegong68135 жыл бұрын
Actually agree with you even though Charlie O' was my favorite Skater. As mentioned Ken Monte, Bob Woodberry never backed down from him. Heard though never saw Dave Pound or Leroy Gonzalez though neither of them backed down from him either. One memorable was even worse perhaps because I witnessed it. John Parker in '72 & I only thank God Parker made that one short appearance before returning to Games.

That was all play when Charlie lost, it was to make it seem equal and held the excitement in the meetings. Charlie was tougher than almost all and I only remember a guy from an L.A.team when the league split up, who was his equal in fighting with Charlie, and during a halftime grudge race, they really went at it and there was this true hatred that each had for the other. Both suffered real injuries.

Why did the original Roller Derby die off in the 70's ?? and Wasn't the attendance drawing pretty good to when it ended ??

The gas shortage in 1973 made all the travel difficult. Back then there was a east coast tour in the winter and a spring_summer tour up and down California. My family moved from Pittsburgh to the Bay Area in 1971. It was sucn an exciting time in my life because we saw more live games and NEVER missed a tv game. The Derby came back in 1977 with all the old players but after two years about 75 % of the old players retired. But the IrsL carried on with Bill Groll and Joanie Weston keeping the sport alive until it died again in1986 I belive. And I must say Bill Groll did a outstanding job as coach and face of the Bombers after Charlie O retired in !978!!! PLEASE someone put all the games from 73,77 and 78 on bluray!!!

Also Seltzer was going through a Nasty Divorce.. Remember Mr. Seltzer was the Owner of the IRDL.

Also the Skaters attempt to unionize. Independent television stations too were looking @ other forms of entertainment to show on their channels. I believe it was a lot of what the last 2 comments were. Also to be honest I think Jerry Seltzer & his family just got tired of doing Roller Derby with such a small return in the end. They never made a fortune out of the business. Even though too that might had not been their intent, always nice to be in the black vs red!

Thank you TSalty for posting this interview. Of course living in the San Francisco Bay Area was unable to hear this actually broadcasted when live. Hoping that someone with foresight would had & thank you for doing so. Charlie O'Connell will be missed. As Thalliverbird stated Charlie along with Joanie Weston & Ann Calvello were as big in life in the SF Bay Area Sports world, in not general as Mays, Montana, Barry, can we say more! Even if Roller Derby got more theatrical later, O'Connell always seemed to want to keep the game looking as "Pure" if you will! Yes Mr. Roller Derby will be missed!

To a kid in S.F. in the early 70's, he was as big as Willie Mays. I'll never forget the day a couple of years ago when, somebody at a Giants game at AT&T with a Bombers #40 jersey was being surrounded by fans wanting photo's. The newbies asking "What's going on?"
