The perfect musical cocktail for those of us who love history, music and sailing. The video’s photos and illustrations are phenomenal and compliments the music and blend of Mark Knopfler and James Taylor’s voices so wonderfully well.

This, Gentlefolk, with all the beautiful accompanying visualizations, is a Work of true Genius. I speak here on authority of my living history personna, "Col° Thomas Cresap, Maryland Militia..." My struggles against the Pennites' encroachments into the Colonies of Maryland and western Virginia are legendary to very few due to the circumstances following that travail, but both Known & Appreciated by our beloved Governor Sharpe and close ally, Lieutenant Governor Dinwiddie of the Colony of Virginia--also Factor & Member of the Ohio Company of Virginia. You, Jeremiah and Charlie, have settled the matter--for now--in the Contention between us. After all, the Line must have been drawn, Somewhere. Now here, in 1763, our next Contention of that sort, I foresee, will be with The Crown, over HRM George III's so-called "Proclamation Line..." 🤔

Everything about this shrieks CLASS . I remember when I first heard it and it was so different to other songs with the historical facts about the Mason Dixon Line . I was mesmerized by the sounds in the music. One of the best songs ever .. at least to me .

No it has to do with separating the North who rejected slavery and the South. Many a slave escaped to reach that line and cross it. Wikipedia : The largest portion of the Mason-Dixon line, along the southern Pennsylvania border, later became informally known as the boundary between the Southern slave states and Northern free states.

Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon were both assistants to astronomer James Bradley at the Royal Conservatory at Greenwich. They were brought to America to settle a border dispute between the inheritors of the land grants establishing Maryland and Pennsylvania. Taking into account the curvature of the earth, the pair carried out extremely precise measurements using astronomical tables and angles based on circular arcs. Their method quickly became the basis for establishing other town and state boundaries, as well as the U.S.-Canada border.

@@frankgellenthin3733 😘 MK was a storyteller early on and he's a wonderful interpreter of historical events through music. "Brothers in Arms," "Piper Til the End," "Remembrance Day." "Sultans of Swing" is 45 years old! He wrote the soundtrack to "The Princess Bride"! Going now to check out some of your other videos. Thanks for the shout out!
