Although this thriller offering from Ludlum incorporates his usual suspenseful cloak and dagger fare, to me the entire story ultimately descends into a muddled mess. Guillaume de Matarese, the padrone of the onetime prodigy shepherd boy, becomes deranged with the lust for vengeance towards those who had largely ruined him and his family, yet his young protégé spends his entire adult life trying to bring to fruition the exact opposite of what Matarese had lusted for: revenge! not “If you can’t beat them join them!” Schofield makes a brief allusion to this to Nicholas Guiderone (the now elderly shepherd boy) during their climatic showdown which his nemesis just brushes aside with a brief cryptic reply.
