Not sure what any of the notes are for ga pa da and all that, coming from a casual guitar player, this is very confusing
@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088
@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 10 сағат бұрын
@@imrob5363 sa re ga ma pa da ni sa is equivalent to do re mi fa so la ti do. Whole step whole step half step ect. So whatever you choose your tonic then you can figure out what all those notes are exactly. Typically the range of a Dilruba or an Esraj is from C - E. Here is a link to my video that may make it easy to understand kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnvVYq2LpbqGpa8si=3q-WnSdBsFL_ocYn

When you play with the Guitar is your Dilruba in tune? and are the sympathetic strings in tune? tune meaning the strings are tuned to the notes that you are using with the guitar player? Sometimes you may have some sympathetic strings that are out of tune and or are tuned but to other notes that are out of the key youre playing in. BECAUS ETHE DIlruba is micro tonal, when you glide past those notes you may activate them and you hear these strings resonate that are out of key to the modes or scales that you are playing. These are a few possibilities
@Upa1824
@Upa1824 Ай бұрын
@@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 hey Keith I think a whole bunch of my sympathetic strings were sharp. I wasn't sure if it was because dilruba isn't equal temperament or something. Will experiment with it a bit further to see that was the problem.
@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088
@learnesrajdilrubaonline1088 Ай бұрын
@@Upa1824 Yeah I figured that was the issue. Having your Sympathetic strings well tuned especially again tuned to the key and mode you are playing in makes a world of a difference. Cheers!
@elsawiegers1093
@elsawiegers1093 Ай бұрын
thank you for this information. however, it seems that the tuning is more-or-less up to the player. i have the strings tuned pa - sa - ma - sa, and therefore on the pa string, sa is the 5th fret. this gives me the tuning for raga bhupali, and probably some more ragas, i will find out, and that is enough for the moment. as for now i won't try to change the ga to komal ga, neither ni ti komal ni. that will be something for the future.....

I totally agree with you on the machine pegs, difference in sound between the two instruments, etc. (I never played esraj but I have a friend who is a professional player) I also play sitar and wonder why more sitar players do not adopt machine tunings (Except for ovation sitars) Thanks for your videos.

I don't post things online, for privacy reasons. But I would be happy to share information with you privately, one to one via email. Hey Arjuna, I’m really happy to hear that you found the videos I posted helpful. Im sorry you feel the way you do but maybe you misunderstood my message and intent. Right now, I’m working to put together comprehensive content for a full beginner’s course for Dilruba/Esraj. Unfortunately, given the amount of time/resources it is taking me to consolidate this material - recording, editing , etc., it is very difficult for me to put all of the content up completely free on KZbin. I solely live off of the money I make doing music. The amount I am charging for the full course is not steep. It is easily accessible and affordable for virtually anyone. When I was starting out I was absolutely thrilled when I found an online course back in 2006 and even went to the UK to continue my studies. I’ve always been happy to pay my teachers for their time and am still doing so. The small money I make from anything i do online is reinvested into my own personal lessons with my Dilruba teacher.

Tuning the wooden pegs is much easier if we use a tuning wrench. In my variant, it is just a piece of wood with a hole cut in a shape of peg's handle (which must be sort of flat, not a round one). I've learned to use it for my self-made Latvian folk instrument, Kokle (horizontal harp). Because Kokle has less body mass (usually made of pine wood), wooden pegs also influence sound. Metal tuning pegs (like those of modern guitar) are heavier, and thus muffle the overtones. The lighter, the better. Of course, I haven't been able to get Esraj for myself yet, so it is just an educated guess from my experience with the 4 Kokles that I have built.
