The lion that’s dancing next to the multi level carpark is pretty much like the original one we had many years ago at the very beginning of new year celebrations in Melbourne. All different colours.

Its great to see such a large mix of traditional and also modern Futsan (Foshan) lion head designs being used all through out Melbourne.

Happy Chinese New Year! The dragon is beautiful. but I find the lion dance is still not the same as those in HK, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Certainly the dance has branched off into a few main styles. Even the Hok san style which is used so much in public performances seems to differ from region to region.

I’ve been going to CNY in the city of Melbourne for around 60 + years . Back then there wasn’t that many Chinese or other Asians or a huge crowd. And also only one lion. After all the lion dancing and it “eating” of the lettuce and collecting of the red money pockets it ended at the Southern Cross hotel forecourt where the guys from the club would perform their martial arts. This year I was a little disappointed, what happened to the street food?

While I haven't been going for nearly as long as you! (very impressive btw!) I do remember the plentiful food stalls that used to line some of Chinatown and also Russell. Perhaps a health and safety thing?

@@dancewithlions I at first thought the same thing about health and safety but Springvale has food stalls every year so I don’t know what the problem is. I’ve inquired on the what’s on Melbourne website whom I contacted previously for info about CYN so I’m waiting for a response. I’m ABC what about you? Not many of us Chinese back then.

@@jkl1202 Yes ABC as well. Either way its wonderful to see so many people out celebrating after a few years of Covid. Keep me posted on the food stalls! it would be great to see them thriving again! :)

@@dancewithlions Hi H Lam I’ve been in contact with the City of Melbourne, they told me I had to contact the Melbourne Chinatown association which I did several days ago. It looks like I’m not likely to hear from them about the food stalls. Hopefully they’ll have them back next year. I didn’t bother to walk the whole length of them to check them out. I saw one that had long triangular shaped waffles on a stick with different toppings for $12-$15. Others being Bank of China, Bupa etc. Who’s interested in that sort of thing on a day like that? Did you see any food?

@@jkl1202 hopefully youre right that we'll see more more action next year. I dont recall seeing any food related stalls, but I must admit I may have missed a few areas. I went to Box hill last weekends for their festivities and it was packed with food. A Filipino place was selling tasty looking skewers which looked wonderful. It really reminded me of the days of china town when you'd see plumes of smoke from the bbq's which give the firecrackers a run for their money... 😄
