I thought the opening statement rather silly..unless I am mistaken..equating the statement - living things as being somehow an incorrect form of a verbal statement by going back to a theory of the begining of the universe..I don't see the point at all..perhaps I need educating ?

Great podcast! Richard is one of my favorite anthropologist. I am curious why he never speaks about the possibility that homo erectus was fermenting foods, especially vegetation, before learning to cooking them.

Thanks. I suspect that Thea provided the jolt - 4.25 m years ago and actually created the earth (as it is now, supplying 40% of the mass), and the moon, altering our rotation to 24 hours, providing a regular powerful alternating pulse the early Tsunami like tides.. mostly by delivering massive kinetic shock, double cooking us. This is what kicked the geosphere into the new phase of development you describe so fantastically well.

59:43 This would explain why women have been the ones primarily pushing the agenda of a male dominated patriarchy.
@treetoon_2 жыл бұрын
There's a bias among both men and women to form individual groups, but there's also bias among individuals to form groups around their own similarities. I wouldn't be so quick to categorize these things as patriarchies or matriarchies, but rather as a natural consequence of groups, if women form groups their potential power is still less than than men who form groups, and the group who is more powerful naturally wins. One way to quantify to the degree that our societies are patriarchal is by determining how our democratic societies would look like if the predisposed bias for men, including women, to choose individuals into power would vanish. Given that the hierarchies are currently male dominated I can imagine a small yet insignificant tilt towards selecting women. This is because there are a multitude of factors that primarily pushes men into the top of these hierarchies that seem more significant, such as their personality proclivity whereby on average they are more willing to do nothing but work non-stop to get to the top for the express purpose of attaining power in a hierarchy. This is also supported by the evidence related to how men and women choose partners which directly correlate to their evolutionary interests, men primarily strive for competence, ability to attain competence and status because they recognize these as traits that women subconsciously look for in men, whereas women's interest is in ability to nurture, the physical and their ability to prioritize time, effort and to organize. Whenever you do these analyses there are so many variables at play that it's difficult to figure out what's causing what. Are men intentionally tyrannical? It doesn't seem that way any more than the proclivity for female groups given the opportunity. So to the degree that the patriarchy exists one has to ask the fundamental question, is it worth using a discriminatory and sexist system against men with purpose to select women into the hierarchy? I highly doubt it to be justified, especially if say the patriarchy bias is responsible for only 5% of the reason why men are in the top, so whatever sexism is currently at play I'd wager it'd make virtually no difference in the outcome of how our systems are currently run.

“All societies are patriarchal.“ why are there women leaders in some societies? “Because those are patriarchal societies. They are also democracies and best people are chosen for the job”. He seems to have some irrational grievance against men. That kind of undermines his methodology.
@virtuousvillain98743 жыл бұрын
As soon as there is universal voting, its no longer a patriarchy. Women are more than 50% of votes and if you look at the policy it vastly benefits women as they are such a tight voting block on anything that benefits them.

It’s unfortunate to see a professional speak on some of these topics with such bias and frequently allowing his political views obviously influence his “opinions”.

Eric is one of the most interesting and knowledgeable expert on the origin of life on earth. His jointly developed theories are shaping a paradigm shift on how we view what life is and how life came into being on earth. I wish there were a lot more of his content online. I’d love to see him in dialogue with Nick Lane , UCLondon. Now that would be an interesting conversation.

Richard Dawkins too, would love to see these two in conversation. I've only discovered Professor Eric Smith today and am watching as much of his presentations and conversations as I can find. I love his way of speaking concisely and how elegantly he handles some seriously bat shit crazy questions. I strive to do the same but do not reach anything like the level he does and thus do not communicate to the uninformed or delusional as well as he does.
