The Swiss: Start at the left write the sum from left to right. It will be 6 4, add 1 to the bottom 3, difference will now be 3 instead of 4, then 5 will be left.. You will get 53.46.

It would depend on the numbers. .80 is a nice round number so the latter works better but sometimes the first method would be faster. I usually do the latter when doing calculations in my head but the first method when the problem is written.

I actually use both methods. Plus the count up method. Never heard them being called „American“ or „Singapore“.
@rawmath10 ай бұрын
I find myself doing the same, switching back and forth but I’m starting to like the Singapore method since it forces you to think more about the setup I.e. how to rewrite the problem to eliminate the need for trading

It's easier to in your head. It's not a new problem.

@@mxnokuma4335 yeah I agree it’s better for mental maths to do this but on paper it’s a bit unnecessary

Bro just do it my way 23 -15 + 5 = 20 +3 = 23 --- 8 (because you add 5 and 3) Every time I go through any math equation that’s what went through my head for anything simple like that. lol Maybe that’s why I’m bad at math
@stevedriscoll253911 ай бұрын

Seems like this might be useful in more complicated problems. Obviously you used a simple problem for illustrative purposes.

I have students in high school that can’t use the standard subtraction algorithm of regrouping, but understand this immediately. But yeah I always start simple and gradually get to more complicated problems
@Automcanic11 ай бұрын
What about flipping the question. Especially in a simple format. 15+x=23 get your fingers out and count from 15 to 23 and get 8.

The truth value of a conditional statement is not dependent on the truth values of its constituents, only how they relate to one another. 6 times out of 7, it is not Monday, but regardless of weather "today is Monday" is true, it follows that when it is Monday, it will be Tuesday. On Saturdays, the statement "tomorrow is Sunday" is true, but it as a conclusion does not follow from the condition "today is Monday", so the overall statement is false. In the third statement, there is no causal connection between dogs having 3 heads, and dogs flying; the conclusion does not follow from the premise, therefore it is false. It's just as easy to imagine a hypothetical where dogs have 3 heads and fly as one where dogs have 3 heads and don't. In the fourth statement, the conclusion is something that is true in all conditions, regardless of their truth values, and thus it is overall true. Even if hypothetically, sharks walked on land, 1+1 would still be 2.
