Appreciate the effort bro but I left with more questions than I came with. Hell I knew more before watching. So much for the chill vibe I had going today. 😡 👎🏽

I'm surprised you didn't do a u-turn at the first intersection and hop right on 80 instead of going through the industrial park.

how much run out did you have before the install?
@dcxplant2 жыл бұрын
Per S&S crankshaft runout no more than .003" Any more than that at the gears will be very noisy at best, and could break if the runout gets worse. Gear driven cams are cool, but check your crank runout before buying anything. If your runout is more than .003", get the hydraulic tensioners. Or, fix the runout, then install the gear set (more complication, more money). Also, if your in there, replace the inner cam bearings. Cheap insurance. The removal install tool is less than $100 bucks.

Crank runout? Couldn't find any mention of it. Must have been under .003 if it's been running ok for this many years.

Pressing of parts is necessary at different temperatures. The shaft is cold, and the bearing is hot. Also, the bearing is cold, and the aluminum crankcase is hot. If you were collecting the Urals, it would fall apart after 1000 km because of such an assembly. You can also collect it on a cold one, but only the landing will weaken. When the engine warms up, the aluminum will expand more than the steel and the bearings may start to dangle in the crankcase.

I would have changed the cam plate to hydraulic doing away with the spring tensioners. Once the Harley junk pressed together flywheel ( crankshaft) slips the cam gearing will be done.

as of today- how many miles on your King since the upgrade. I guess I'm curious if the runout issue came back to haunt you. You didn't have your crank pin welded, you went gears and you added power... perfect storm. anyway- Ride Safe... and GREAT music btw.

I'll put the bolt torque/ lubrication issues to rest if anyone's interested. In my RACE ENGINE SHOP over several decades, we've been there/done that with torque/lubricants. I've experimented, and recorded data on oil petroleum, oil synthetic, silver anti-seize, moly, mixtures of moly and oil, gear lubricant, and yes even dry. My advice, is always use the RECOMMENDATION OF THE FASTNER MANUFACTURER, and or the general manufacturer if it's say, Harley Davidson, Chevrolet, Honda, etc. Different lubricants WILL provide DIFFERENT stretch for torque values, you'd be AMAZED. Cleanliness is paramount regardless of lubricants used. That means threads, internal and external, major and both minor thread diameters. I prefer to clean all ghreadswith lacquer thinner and air dry and or compressed air with a dryer/filter. Some head bolts require a angle torque measurement, and I highly recommend doing that if the manufacturer calls for it. Some fasteners are torque to yield, meaning throw them away after use. On NASCAR ENGINES you wouldn't believe what we go through just to prep a set of Main/Head Studs, Washers, and Nuts. And yes I said prepping the WASHERS!!. Please understand that I'm not trying to be Mr. KNOWITALL, just trying to help. For every guy who agreess with me, 2 guys have never owned a torque wrench and have built engines with 200,000 miles. GOD BLESS you all.

Is there a mark on the cam to line up to the gear for timing? Or does the gear only go onto the cam one way? Referring to the inner gears

Also, check your crank run out before you consider installing gear drive cams. To much run out will damage the gears over time.
@josephcivita14505 жыл бұрын
When you press the cam in make sure you support the inner race on the bearing so you don't damage the balls.

Chain drive =a rear shoe that you have to dig deep to replace. Gear drive = cannot tolerate crank runout. Why hasn't someone made a cam thats gear on the back and chain on the front?? Thats how it should have been from the factory.
@thomasmarchese28085 жыл бұрын
James Southworth seriously strong gear drive rear, easy tensioner in the outside. I wonder if you could take gear drive cams and reinstall the chain driven sprockets on the out side. Therefore gear driven cam to cam. Chain driven crank to cam. Is it possible? Has anyone done it? If so how did it work out? If not can it be done? I’d be interested to try if I ever get to spend the money on gear drive.

I have flown in that area many times. For me, the actual Panoche Hills became boring pretty quickly. My flying buddy and I did a couple of flights down into the canyons, but that's about all there is that's scenic. We prefer areas back along Little Panoche Road, Panoche Creek and out New Idria Road Into the Griswold Hills. More actual subjects. Below is alink to one of the videos I shoot out on Little Panoche Road just north of the new solar facility, it is an autonomous Litchi waypoint mission. There are many other videos on my channel shot in that area. It's a great place to fly. I drive there from Morgan Hill to go have a day flying in the open!!
