Thanks for sharing. What can be seen on the 3D lidar model that cannot be seen or measured in-situ?
@felixmorsdorf1391
@felixmorsdorf1391 4 ай бұрын
3D LiDAR is not a replacement for in-situ measurements, but a complementation. In this project we will use the 3D information derived from ground-based and aerial LIDAR and photogrammetry to derive light availability and biomass distribution within the canopy. Such information is typically not available from in-situ measurements.

Very interesting, never thought that VPD could affect the trees so much. Is there any chance to look at some of your results? So is cooling the leaves and needles with water mist in the summer a good strategy?

i'm surprised they didn't engineer a little more variance in the shape of the test boulder. That thing is just gonna fall like a sphere more or less... a shape which obviously most boulders are not. Regardless, I could watch this sort of thing all day long

Nice. So three or four times a year, heavy rain runs off that convex cone-shaped area of mountains, gathers mud and rocks and rushes down the gully and then down into the river below. They have an alarm system to warn people to evacuate the immediate area, but it all seems to be contained. The details escaped me, because my French isn't very good!

Yep. On the right side of the bowl is a very brittle type of Limestone, the left side of the mountain consists of Quartzite. This combination make this location very prone for "mudslides" or debris flow, therefore an ideal location for scientific studies since the year 2000 (model making and testing them). The limestone forms the dense sludge and let the quarzite rocks (they break off in big chunks) literally float away. They have a radar and seismometer/geophone to trigger the alarm system, when the level in the riverbed uphill reaches 20-30 cm of depth. They measure all kinds of parameters on top of it like pressure, velocity, density... On other locations these events are rare, 30-40 years apart, but as you could understand the french speaking and german subtitles, here they occur 2-3x per year. On their webpage they say 4-5 times/year. Location: Switzerland (french speaking region), Kanton ("county") of Wallis, near the village of Susten (german spelling) or Souste (in french). The River is called Rotten (german) or La Rhône (in French) which flows out finally into the mediterranean sea near Marseille. The mountain to the left is called Illhorn, the upper part in the bowl is the "Illgraben" ("Ill Canyon") and the lower part i assume is the Illbach ("Ill creek"), which ends to the river Rhône (Rotten) Heres a channel with a lot of footage for the Illgraben events on this channel: kzbin.info/door/MFhWy-351DyMu470LMT2KQ My favorite: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnaxlmqtebCDbKs
