This track really sounded so much better on the cheapest entry-level sound card that was available at the time. The drums sounded almost like a Roland TR-808! Peace.

I’m pretty sure this track was used. It occurs in City Hall when you’re about to get stabbed and you must quickly draw down on & arrest the perp. I remember that part so well because the floppy disk version of the game has a bug: Carey gets stabbed to death and there is nothing you can do about it. A software patch (pq4cuf.exe) was required to get past this part.
@XeenMusic29 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info. Do you know if there's a video or anything of that being used? I thought I had went through a couple KZbin playthroughs and didn't remember hearing it. I also checked the game code and don't remember seeing it called up anywhere, but I could have overlooked something,
@YarisTexАй бұрын
Such a great track. It’s a shame it was only used in this screen only. I still prefer the MT-32 versions but I’m enjoying the FMT versions as well. A bit of shame also that there wasn’t a bigger effort to do better with OPL2 and 3 on the PC
@XeenMusicАй бұрын
I've talked with the designers before and know there's quite a bit that was cut out of this game. It's odd that a track that long would be for a single room only. Makes me wonder if the Cavern of Emeralds location was originally larger or something... Or, perhaps, they just composed a bunch of longer music for the game and already had it leftover and just placed it there because it existed (there's several noticeably lengthy unused music as it is). Though the original filename for the track is "EMERALDS.MID".
@XeenMusic29 күн бұрын
I believe the OPL2/OPL3 versions are the first versions that are composed for each title, then the MT-32 versions (then SC-55 - post Kyrandia 1 games), then Japanese versions.

I got stuck here 😅 I didn't know what to do! The staff wasn't working... I think the troll king told us how to use it, but I guess I forgot... So, I searched a gameplay on KZbin (I don't like to do that bc I prefer solving puzzles on my own.. but it was too difficult!) And found the answer! (If you're curious, you have to tap the bottom of the staff, and the top letter must be an F, not a T)

On the MacIntosh, this was the published track for Timbermist Woods. More specifically, there were two music options in the menu: "High Quality" and "Low Impact". As I recall, they were identical for every scene... except Timbermist Woods. The low impact version was the DOS track. The high quality version was this. I'm so glad you put this up. I had been searching the internet high and low for years, thinking it was lost. I eventually got a Mac emulator and recorded and published to my own channel, not knowing you had already done the same.
@XeenMusicАй бұрын
So is the music used in Timbermist in the PC version of the game entirely unused in the Macintosh version then or did they repurpose it? Do you know if there's any other music that is different in the High Quality version?
@PinochleSundaeАй бұрын
@@XeenMusic Not repurposed; like I said, that was still the Timbermist Woods track when "Low Impact" was selected. Timbermist Woods was the only scene with 2 tracks. Every other scene had the usual DOS track, regardless of which option was selected. At least that's how I remember it; this was 30 years ago. I'd have to go through the whole game again to be sure. I don't recall the Pool of Sorrow track on MacIntosh. It was the same music as right outside Brandon's home. Fun fact, a lot of the sound effects were recycled from earlier games, namely Eye of the Beholder (1990, same developers)!
@XeenMusicАй бұрын
Thanks for the info. I suppose that still doesn't verify if the "High Quality" track, which the original MIDI is called "FOREST2.MID" was initially composed with Timbermist Woods in mind, or whether it was repurposed. Because, in many games, the composer is commissioned to write a piece for a certain location, and then the designers use it elsewhere, somestimes because they think it might fit better elsewhere, but usually in the pre-95 DOS area because of floppy disc space limitations. It's amazing to hunt down and properly record and publish lots of unused music when I can find it, because it's not like the music is always scrapped because it's not good (in fact, in Kyrandia 1, I like some of the unused music more than the music that was used). Lots of unused music already sitting in garbage dumps because I didn't get to it in time...
@XeenMusicАй бұрын
Also thanks for the heads-up regarding the Eye of Beholder music. That's actually a series I'm presently trying to negotiate with the rights holder to publish in the future. I did notice sound effects shared between Kyrandia 1, Kyrandia 2 and Lands of Lore 1 (mostly in the Adlib versions), but I haven't done enough rearch on the Eye games to notice those connections yet.
@PinochleSundaeАй бұрын
@@XeenMusic in particular, activating the Crystals of Alchemy used the same sound effect as activating the stone portals in EOB. Not just close, but the same. Other sfx recycled included the gargoyles coming alive at the castle gate, the healing sound, and the sound of correctly placing a gem on the alter.

Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. Seeing there's a bunch of Takeshi Abo's works in this channel officially shared, there's any plan to also share Rhyme Star? Both the PC-98 and maybe, just maybe the cancelled SNES soundtrack? Anyway keep up the awesome work :)
@XeenMusicАй бұрын
I would like to acquire the rights to do Rhyme Star and some of his other misc PC-98 works, which would include the cancelled SNES soundtrack (but I think there's only 5 tracks from the SNES version that were made, or at least there's only 5 recordings that survive). There's a few other unused Rhyme Star music too.

Oh my God! So, Daventry was playable area initially? I can't believe how much content there was.. I'm very interested in knowing the development process of this game! The story, art works, voice acting, concepts, scrapped content ... like the sort of stuff you've been saying in your video descriptions. Where can I read about all those and what you've said in one place? Or a video perhaps? Thank you for sharing the music and extra insight to the game.

I have all the comments from the video descriptions compiled in a document that was intended to be included with the bandcamp/patreon versions of the soundtrack. But Neal Grandstaff never got around to commenting on all the tracks, so I never published it like that yet. I suppose if you purchase the soundtrack at one of those places, I can email the current document to you.
