Happy to have happened on this video today. Actually, in January, I decided I would set one of my camera bodies to monochrome for the whole year. It's been a lot of fun to have a full year to think in B&W. I am getting better at is as well (I think anyway).

Yes, the rule of odds is art. Except in wedding photography 🤔 And if the dead space between subjects is too much, you can only choose one side or the other and crop, unless nothing or blah works. Stepping to one side or the other, to bring subjects closer, using the better angle, will help in the matter. Attractive backgrounds always help, especially with street photography. Busy backgrounds can simply lose the whole shots story, or main character. For some reason, gremlins go about the night placing trash cans in front of otherwise beautiful buildings -- oh they are so mean. Bright objects, white or yellow bits appearing in color images will pull the eye to that area and away from the intended subject point of interest, so they are to be avoided, toned down in post editing, or cloned-out, though in some cases this might be considered too much in street photography in the purest sense. In B&W, if you you gray / darken the bright spot unwanted, it is usually enough. Thanks Peter for the video, Loren

I am late to lunch as usual, but it’s an enjoyable video. I use all three of these lenses. I rarely shoot extreme wide angle, Which is why I have never splashed for the 7-14; if needed I live with the 12mm f/2.0 and make it work. I also use the 75mm f/1.8 sparingly, but love it; why ai have never splashed out for the 40-150 PRO. The 45mm f/1.8 is my favorite. 🤩 If it could only be just a tad wider; but then it would be a different lens. 😊😊. I am toying with purchasing a 20mm, hoping prices may decrease in the future, or hoping OM Systems survives.

Every day is a school day. Always something to learn and practice in photography. Great vid. You ask do we notice this 3 element rule in our photos? My favourite from my recent photo walk was 3 subjects. A young guy looking back at a young lady, who also looked back at him as they passed, while the mother was in the middle looking into her handbag, oblivious of her sons gaze. 3 🙂

Another excellent video. I find these style of videos to be the best, were we get to see you taking the actual pictures you are using as an example for the topic being discussed. I absolutely agree on using 3's and odd numbers. I think I've been doing it for some time without thinking about it, because it does feel pleasing to the eye.

Great video Peter, thanks for making this video. I had a photography teacher that said this is one of the most important things if you are a commercial photographer- because you will be hired by that style you have.
@ForsgardPeter3 күн бұрын
I have heard the same and it applies especially in bigger markets. In local small markets that can be a bad thing.
@Raist3db3 күн бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter wow. Thats a perspective I did not consider - bigger vs smaller markets. I can think of something why the difference now that you mention it but in your experience why you think that is such? Never thought about that so thanks for pointing that out.

In Finland there are about 5.6 million people. There are a lot of cities in the world that has more people than whole Finland. There are much more potential customers alone in a big city like let's say London than in whole Finland. Let's have an example like a portrait photographer. Most portrait studios in Finland do also commercial photography for local busineses. There are not enough clients otherwise. There is just not enough people. When it comes to style there is the same problem. A strict style might mean less customers from a small amout of potential clients. A short answer, but you propably understand what I mean.
@Raist3db3 күн бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter Oh I get it. Thanks for sharing that perspective. I didn't think of that so I really appreciate sharing your experience here. Makes sense! I am from Puerto Rico myself. At one point, now now, PR had like 4 million people (!), now just about 3.2 million - on an island that is pretty much 110 miles (~180Km, west-east) by 40 miles (~64Km, north-south). I would imagine Finland once outside the city would be quite quite sparse. But apparently that doesn't stop you from having more Saunas than cars :-) Or so I heard :-). I need to visit sometime. Have an ex-coworker who is Finnish and looks like Twin Peaks-David Lynch has a following, along with being the place where the video games Alan Wake and Control come from. Anyhow, thanks again.

Cool video. I like both of you. So yes, options is the enemy of art. So yes, basically having too much gear = it's easier to get distracted, not pay attention, make mistakes. Agreed 1000%. My only disagreement with you both is on camera size- I have had many advantages when I go around with a smaller "toy" camera.

Having reached retirement age in The Blue Mountains West of Sydney, I am retiring my Tree-Lopping gear too, I intend getting serious about my love for everything Olympus. I bought a Zhiyun Weebill 2 pro+ Gimbal, have many lenses from collecting kits on eBay, including many of the 4/3 series with an adaptor. I also kitted out both Sons, and swapping around lenses is always an option. I am now prepared to upgrade from my silver EM1, my EM5 will be my spare with different lens options. The Mk-ii & Mk-iii are both known as compatible with my gimbal, I suspect the EM1-X will be too. I plan on mounting my 12-40 f-2.8 pro on whichever upgrade I choose, money is not a main issue, but as always I am careful when I buy. Any thoughts Peter ? I follow your channel enthusiastically; your efforts are much appreciated thankyou. 🙃🏁

Hi Peter. When you said about the 10kg limit and that you can not mount really big cameras.. at what cameras were you referring???? ARRI's cinema rigs? Because ANY mirrorless or dslr camera with battery grip and any 600mm F4 lens is still under 10kg. Cheers!

It is 2024 but I am adding a comment anyway. I just got an EM1.3 and an EM1X. I will be keeping my Canon 6Ds but sold my Canon R series cameras and small Lumix M4/3 cameras. This second, (third?) attempt at mirrorless is driven by theater photography where mirrorless has so many advantages. I love the EM1X for easy switch to portait mode, endless battery life and general comfort. I have also shot an airshow, waterfalls and landscape. The EM1.3 is also good but the biggest problem is Olympus menus. Twice, the EM1.3 has gotten into some mode during a live performance where it will not respond to focus, aperture input and even the power switch. That is one resson I have two bodies, for backup. But unless I can diagnose the problem, I will have to replace it. One thing I learned in this video is the superior ISO performance of the EM1.3!

It looks horrible and feels cheap but it's a very good affordable lens. I never used it that much but recently I have. It allows you get more of the scene in, so it immerses you in a scene. You get the whole context. With 4:3 format you have to an interesting foreground or you'll have to crop...

OM SYSTEM has a newer version of the lens that looks better. It is otherwise the same lens.

I have the mk1 version, it feels cheap, slow to focus and extends too far but certainly at the long end you would be hard pressed to see any difference in image quality compared to my 40-150 Pro unless you pixel peep at 300%. I guess the 40-150 Pro is such a beautiful lens to use, it is easy to fall in love with it

I get on well with the menu and I’m ok with the lack of joystick. I would prefer the scene and art modes as a menu option and use extra space on dial for custom settings. I’d also like a couple of small primes with weather sealing . I would jump all over a weather sealed 14mm pancake.

You say you're going to cover everything in detail then brush over Art Filters simply because you don't like them yourself!? 🤷 I'm wondering how, when bracketing Partial Colour (e.g. Art #14) alongside 'say' Monotone', 'Vivid', and 'Diorama II', do I then call up the colour dial to select the colour I wish to highlight in the the photo being taken?
