Cretan laouto is steel strings and no microtones. Old cretan laouto in Chania area was almost same as island or mainland ( other greek areas Pelonisso or Ipiros) shorter laouto. Lavta or politiko laouto ( lute of Constantinople ) was gut string laouto and was made in Istanbul ( Constantinople) mainly by Greek makers , one of the oldest known Kosta Ventouras (1850-1890 for example) but also played by Greek family musicians ( Leontaridis family ) along with klassic kemence ( fiddle)

I think personally the maker of lavta Emanouel Venios ( Manol usta) was one of the first that made hybrid lute ( lavta with steel strings Little bigger size ) as his origin was from greek island . Here in greece there are 2-3 old laoutos of him that are bigger than lavta . And around 1900 other maker in Athens made much bigger ( mourtzinos also made the first “cretan” style used by west cretan players firstly) and then many others were making what we call laouto . And Cretan makers started around 1920 making there one style with first maker Emanouel Fragiadakis in Chania.

Of course Tanburi Cemil bey continued the lavta-klassic kemence tradition of his greek teachers Nikolaki Efendi or Lavtacu Andon or Christo . But then lavta was replaced from oud. And revived again in 1990s in Greece and Turkey again because of greek-turkish nice music collaborations again after many years of seaze

Also Lavta Was follwing and follows kemence tuning relation la re la Re greek laouta are in fourths la re Sol do island , mi la Re sol cretan high to low. Funny thing 3rd course is lower string.

Of course not. Lavta is longer scale 65-70 cm and microtonal movable “frets” ( fishing line) tuning a d a D high to low. Strings are pArtial same style as some of the oud( material)

Νομίζω πως είναι Πολίτικο λαούτο. Μοιάζει με το ούτι αλλά δεν έχει τις τρύπες και οι χορδές είναι λιγότερες.
