I listened to HFS in the mid 70’s… but then I discovered WGTB, 90.1 fm, and HFS was left in the dust, until GTB went off the air in 79 for being too liberal for Georgetown University. So… HFS became my station once again.😂

I thankfully missed Vietnam by 2 years but i still went down to sign up for the military. My dad for years said join the air force At 18 i went down to sign up and they "pretended" to give you what you want. I said helicopter pilot. He laughed and said we don't have helicopters, the army does. I got up and walked out.

I wish this were the norm, but sadly it’s far from it. My sister went to the hospital overdosed on heroin. She had cardio endocarditis, a damaged heart valve pumping MRSA infected blood into her lungs, severe malnutrition and was on the verge of death. They called it an overdose and, in her wheelchair, pushed her right outside and into the sidewalk by the road. My uncle threatened to sue the hospital. Like magic they brought her back and immediately performed open heart surgery on her. I’ve never used heroin or played around with pain meds. When I had my two babies in c section, my doctor discharged me with zero pain meds. I ended up calling the on call and she prescribed me the dilaudid she said I should have been given originally. My second pregnancy same thing - c section. I went home and began to have excruciating pain. Doctor told me to use Tylenol and Motrin. Turns out I popped my stitches. They never did give me anything for it, but rather treated me like an addict. The whole system is broken. Either you’re an addict not worthy of saving or a person in pain denied help and labeled a drug seeker. Get it together medical community, people are suffering on both sides.

The best music that came out of HFS for me was the band Prefab Sprout in 1988. Also eEverything But The Girl in 1986. Two groups I may never have heard about if not for HFS. We moved to Bethesda in 1967 when I was 5. Best radio station ever!!!

I have been to the er twice many years back when I was kicking opiates cold turkey... I sincerely believed my body was shutting down and thought I was actually gonna die. I will never forget the way I was treated by the staff.. it really showed me how merciless and icey cold this world can be... when the only ones who can actually help you treat you with contempt and distrust how can you possibly get help??
