@@MiaHessMusic I tend not to wear any but I am small chested. I would recommend something in cotton so it's more breathable and ideally in your skin color so you don't worry that it shows under whites or light colors. I take mine from intimissimi. I find they have a good price-quality balance although they don't have all skin colors sadly.

Loose, light- to medium-colored, long linen clothes, long sleeves shirts, trousers and long skirts or dresses, actually keep one cooler than going bare. The skin absorbs a lot of infrared heat, in addition to the damaging solar radiation causing premature aging and skin cancer. If I get a lot of the sun’s heat absorbed into my skin for hours, I feel unpleasantly feverish, even if wearing high-SPF (70) sunscreen, which I do every day. I’m a geologist who has to work in every climate and I know that white or beige linen pants and shirts and a good broad-brimmed hat really keeps the body cooler. An airy sunhat is essential for preventing heat-related illness, I’ve had it from working on a 115F day on a drilling rig, and it’s not fun!

Viscose/rayon/lyocell, the “manmade cellulosic fibers” are ok for linings because they’re breathable, they’re made from plant fibers, not petrochemical plastics. But so many brands use polyester. It only costs a penny more per garment to use rayon, why don’t they just charge more? I don’t get it: I’ll pay a lot more to get breathable linings. I think Banana Republic and Theory are the only US brands that use breathable rayon or cotton lining fabrics, so that’s where I shop, among US brands.
@alicechoux973
@alicechoux973 21 күн бұрын
@@kimberlyperrotis8962 makes sense. Also in Europe often the lining is synthetic which is so annoying!

I wear silk every day, three seasons a year (under cashmere or Merino in winter), but not in summer, it’s just too hot. I wear only linen in summer, it’s usually about 30-40C and up where I live, even cotton is too hot for a typical summer day here. Today it’s very cool, about 22C, so I’m wearing a cotton-knit dress, but in normal summer weather I wouldn’t. I finally got an entire summer wardrobe in linen for the first time this summer, including blazers and a few sweaters and have been super-comfy and have lots of choices, at last. You don’t know what hot really is until menopause brings on the hot flashes! Wearing any synthetic, plastic fabric or material on my torso, at any time of year, is just unthinkable for me. I still have some polyester pleated midi skirts I love, but I wear those only in cold weather, over a silk slip or petticoat. I’m allergic to plastics, so have to prevent direct skin contact with them, even on my less-sensitive legs. I hope more brands start offering natural-fibers, virtually no one here in California will wear any synthetics. I have to shop mostly French brands.

I do most of my own alterations. But, since it’s been so brutally hot, nearly 40C in my sewing/laundry area, I just took two nee summer items to my tailor. I want to wear them this sumner, but should just have batched them to shorten myself over the winter. He’s charging me $100 US for two simple, not-long, hems, in a linen dress and a pair of cotton trousers. Every time I go in, he raises his prices, yikes. I bought a very full-skirted silk dress from Banana Republic that is too long. I know he will charge me nearly the price of the dress, $300 to shorten it, there is a lot of yardage in it. I hate working on silk, it takes the patience of a saint and the skill of a pro, but I’m neither! My sewing skills are only average. I couldn’t get this printed dress in petite, they only offered petite length in the boring black version. Maybe the in-store tailor will do it for me, they do offer free basic alterations, but when he sees how long that hem is, he won’t want to!

I never liked the oversized look on petite, tiny-framed me, but slightly relaxed is ok. Fit is super-important, I agree. I love a classic, body-skimming, but not tight, nor loose, fit. Most of my fellow American women wear clothes that are much too small, but this only makes them look heavier and squeezed-in. Clothes should have some ease in them. Those horizontal strain lines across the body means the size is too small. I was shocked at what I got from the big Nordstrom sale, everything is enormous! I double-checked my measurements, no change there, and used the specific size chart provided for each item, but everything is two sizes too big, I never had such a flop rate in my life. I can’t now exchange all the items because the smaller sizes I need are already sold out, it’s frustrating. I think it’s that American vanity-sizing that most brands are doing to reduce returns by women who order much smaller than their true size. But, it’s making shopping so difficult for everyone. I wish there would be global size standardization. I shop a lot of French and UK brands, in addition to US and Chinese ones like Lily Silk and Goelia. I don’t care what sizing standard they use, so long as it’s consistent. I think the waist measurement in cm would make most sense, or bust measurement for tops and jackets and waist measurement for dresses and bottoms.

I wash my silk items in my machine’s hand-wash cycle, just not very often, they don’t need it, nor do they need ironing. Silk repels dirt and odors, it just stains easily with food and beverages and oily substances like cosmetics and stains often can’t be removed with home products. If I do get a spot, I take it to the cleaners within a day, they can get virtually anything out if done right away. So, barring any spills, I find this fabric very easy care. I send my wool and cashmere to the dry cleaners occasionally, I can’t do hand-washing because of a back injury. I always wear a silk jersey, long-sleeve tee underneath my wool and cashmere sweaters, it stops itching and keeps the wooly fabrics clean and fresh (if no spots or grime). It’s so much easier to toss a silk tee in the wash cycle every time than to cold-water hand-wash or dry-clean a cashmere sweater (I wouldn’t recommend even the gentlest machine-cycle for these, they’ll shrink and pill). I also wear a silk petticoat under my cashmere dresses. I can’t wear any synthetic fibers or other plastics like faux leather, so my silk items, including all undies and socks, are essential for my wardrobe. I wish I could still get silk tights, but I haven’t seen them for years.

I do iron all my woven linen and cotton items thoroughly. But, then I try not to worry about the creases when I wear them, they just happen when wearing these cool, natural fabrics, especially linen. I wear only linen in summer, even cotton is too warm for our blistering California summers. Today I’m wearing my favorite linen dress, a white Safari-style mini one from Equipment, last year. I know I’ll stay cool and fresh all day, if a bit creased! It’s simply not possible to prevent linen from creasing during wear, but other linen lovers get it. I never put my clothes in the tumble dryer and they stay new-looking forever.

I wear my sunglasses nearly everyday outdoors, all the reflective surfaces in the city make it uncomfortable not too. The only place I could go without them was the wilderness property we used to have. It was very green forest and meadow, with no roads, cars, buildings, etc. But, I think sunglasses are essential in modern urban environments. I always wear Polaroids, they’re really the only lenses that truly protect the vision. I knew three people, including my brother, who didn’t wear them and got cataracts quite young. They all lost the vision in the eye that they had surgically “corrected”, that’s enough to convince me. My brother sat at least four hours a day in bright sun, when available on a concrete surface, no wonder. Unlike me, he was determined to get tanned. Plus, sunglasses always look cool, it’s no style detriment to wear them!

We Americans don’t really have special vacation wardrobes like the British do, probably because we have plenty of hot weather here in most states, so we wear these pieces for everyday. I know Northern Europeans love to take summer trips to hot climates like the Mediterranean to soak up the heat and sun they don’t get at home. But, with our long, hot summers, at least five months here in California, summer hot-destination travel is not as big a thing. When I go to Greece and Italy, I’ll go in the spring. Plus, I only wear linen in summer, I suffer in the heat, but I don’t want to be constantly ironing it while traveling. In spring I can wear cotton and silk, it’s much easier care. Especially silk jersey, my favorite fabric of all for its supreme comfort and easy packing and care - it never needs ironing, is lightweight and non-bulky to pack and dries fast, perfect for travel.

My local consignment shops are filled with 2nd hand synthetic trendy clothes but have a surprisingly good selection of high quality mid-range and luxury bags which are 25 to 50% of the cost of buying new. Just look at the piece - check carefully as you would anything else to make sure the leather, hardware and lining are the quality and in the condition you're willing to accept. I prefer to buy in person after I try items on at the thrift store. The good news about buying used is that the items are often already laundered. Given the poor quality of new clothing these days, one never knows if the clothing will be in one piece or shrunk up to the size of a child after being washed. What I like the least is to buy new online, because, as you mentioned, they don't ethically deal with returns.
