Looks like a 5ft adult. On the big side for a male but not unheard of. I’ve heard of adult males reaching only around 3ft if they’re really stubborn eaters but that would be pretty rare. 3.5-5ft seems common for males and 4-6ft for females. But it varies a good bit. And a 6 year old adult versus a 26 year old adult, is gonna be different too. They grow their whole life.

I got my first ball python 2 months ago and she is now about 7 months old. She didn’t eat for the first 3 weeks but then ate consistently til last week. Usually she is out a climbing and I wasn’t worried about her not eating. I just started to work on new ways to raise my humidity because it was very low. Ever since I started to raise her humidity (last week) and spray down her tank she hasn’t come out at all like she used to. I think she is going into shed because her eyes were grey but her skin doesn’t look like it is getting super dull. I just had the idea of using a nice humidifier and aiming it to land in the tank. Would that be a bad idea? I tried it for 30 minutes and the humidity went up by a lot. I just don’t know why she isn’t coming out and if it’s because I am now actually getting her humidity right? I haven’t even been able to offer her food this week just because she hasn’t come out. I just don’t know what to do because she is still very shy and I haven’t handled her because I am worried about her not eating. I am hoping someone can please help to explain why she isn’t coming out and if the humidifier is a good idea.
@ballpythonbreeder.co.uk_15 күн бұрын
Hi - don't worry too much just yet! You are doing the right thing by spraying and working on the humidity levels. If her eyes look grey and she's hiding, she probably is just getting ready to shed. The whole process could take over a week, and hiding away constantly is prettty normal. If her eyes were grey, then go normal again, she will be ready to shed. A humidifier can work, but and even easier solution if you think she is just about to shed is spraying the substrate under her favourite hiding spot. If she doesn't shed within a few days, comment again so I get a notification and we will take a closer look. In the meanwhile don't panic: hiding, sulking, long sheds and even refusing the occasional meal are all normal BP behavours (if a little frustrating!)

My BP has always been a great eater with no hesitation. Every since he moved to a larger enclosure, I have tried twice and he wouldn't take the rat either time. Any hints?
@ballpythonbreeder.co.uk_15 күн бұрын
This is a tough one because BPs often stop feeding when moved to a larger enclosure. Sometimes, they have a bit of a sulk and go off food for a couple of months. Other times they will refuse until you move them back to a smaller enclosure. Other measures that can work though include adding more hiding places, or covering the enclosure so less light gets in and the snake feels safer. Can I ask how old he is and how much he weighs?

You mentioned that it's not ideal to NOT have heating overnight, but what I've been trying to figure out is an acceptable overnight ambient temperature in the room your snake is in. For example, if your ambient room temp drops overnight to say 72-73 degrees F, that means that the cooler end of a tub or enclosure will be very close to or the same. Are those temps too cool in your experience if the back of their tub or their hide/ hotspot is still up around 88-90 degrees F?
@ballpythonbreeder.co.uk_Ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for watching! No, if the warm spot is still at 88-90f the snake will go there to stay warm and be perfectly fine. It's when there is no heat whatsoever that problems can start 🙂
@dylanjwicklund92Ай бұрын
They can get between 3 and 6 feet. Females tend to be 4 to 6 feet. All depends On subspecies And how much they're eating and fed. Because if they're fed every single week a meal that's perfect size or slightly larger. Yes, they will grow over 3 feet. Well over it. It's just most males tend to be smaller.

@@ballpythonbreeder.co.uk_ Curious about just how big of a boy he really is? Do you weigh your animals? We have a bruiser of a boy, our Hypo Desert Ghost male, who is 4 foot and has been steadily staying around the 1800-gram weight range. He's a stunning animal, but he's by far our biggest boy. All of our other males are right in the 900-1100-gram window.
@ballpythonbreeder.co.uk_Ай бұрын
Honestly I should weigh all of my animals but I don't always unless I'm concerned! With Bobby I go by how he looks because I've had him so long. All I can say is he must be at least 2000g - and 1800 or more is what I would consider a pretty big male. It's also true that Bobby could lose a few grams and still be healthy. If your big male has a chunky head but not excessive fat down his flanks then he's probably at a healthy weight for him if that makes sense 🙂

@@naturebrothers1844 a giant Ball Python? I didn't know they existed but thanks for commenting 🙂
@naturebrothers1844Ай бұрын
I apologize if I came off rude I was blinded by my emotions and was not thinking clearly. I think I assumed that because people have selectively bred dwarf reticulated pythons to be smaller than their wild counterparts they were “giant” ball pythons somewhere. I also thought that even taking into account regional physical differences (like voltas) that male ball pythons would still not exceed 6 ft.
@alexcrowder16738 күн бұрын
@@naturebrothers1844Dwarf and super dwarf reticulated pythons come from islands where they experience island dwarfism. It isnt selective breeding that caused them to be small. People do breed them to other larger retics to get the genetics for different "morphs" onto the smaller reticulated pythons though. the selective breeding is done for patterns and colors. The snakes on those islands were already small (by comparison at least). Breeding them for color actually makes them bigger because we have to breed them to larger snakes. Thats why dwarf retics ussually say what percentage of their genetics come from which islands.Or at the very least what percentage is dwarf or super dwarf. If you feed them enough though, or just from the randomness of genetics, they can sometimes get bigger than expected. Theres really almost no such thing as average. The range of whats normal is absolutely huge. Take my 2 year old 12ft long African rock python for example. Shes on the upper end of the spectrun. A female African rock python could be half her length at the age and still be perfectly healthy. Snakes arent like people. Two snakes could be the same age and from the same clutch and be multiple times lighter or heavier than their siblings. I have burmese pythons who are siblings and the male is a bit bigger than the female even though i feed the female more, and even though females are supposed to get bigger. They are kept exactly the same way. Snake genetics are wild.
@cleanballsukАй бұрын
There has been a few contributing factors to the current market. The insatiable race for multi recessive animals is one, the entire concept of needing to produce multiple clutches to hit one target animal has seen not only an increase in the number of animals being produced but also an increase in the number of unwanted animals from each clutch. Due to smaller breeders not being able to keep up, the gap between the top 5% and the rest has got bigger at a faster rate than ever before accentuating the pyramid scheme. This has removed aspects of control over many projects when that top 5% crash prices to suit their rate of production.

@ballpythonbreeder.co.uk_Ай бұрын
Hi and thank you for watching! So you can add either an analog or digital hygrometer. Hygrometers aren't super accurate (even the digital ones), but they do give you a rough guide to how humid the enclosure is. For example, if your hygrometer reads 60%, the humidity in your enclosure is probably somewhere between 55 - 65%, if that makes sense. Another good indicator is to pick up the snake, and run your hands along its belly from the tail end towards the head. If it feels like the scales are slightly crispy and catching a little on your fingers, that's a sign the snake is dry. Finally, if your snake's eyes dimple or it has trouble shedding, you will know humidity is too low. I'm sure you will get it right before a shed comes around though 🙂
