Verse 1 Amazing Grace how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Verse 2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed! Verse 3 Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. Verse 4 The Lord has promised good to me, His Word my hope secures; He will my Shield and Portion be, As long as life endures. Verse 5 Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A life of joy and peace. Verse 6 The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine; But God, Who called me here below, Will be forever mine. Verse 7 When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun.

It's in 'Folk Songs for Solo Singers, vol. 1' - although it's actually not a folk song! Ed. by Jay Althouse, Alfred Publishing Co.

In the quiet misty morning When the moon has gone to bed When the sparrows stop their singing And the sky is clear and red When the summer's ceased its gleaming When the corn is past its prime When adventure's lost its meaning I'll be homeward bound in time Bind me not to the pasture Chain me not to the plow Set me free to find my calling And I'll return to you somehow If you find it's me you're missing If you're hoping I'll return To your thoughts I'll soon be list'ning In the road I'll stop and turn Then the wind will set me racing As my journey nears its end And the path I'll be retracing As I'm homeward bound again Bind me not to the pasture Chain me not to the plow Set me free to find my calling And I'll return to you somehow Bind me not to pasture Chain me not to the plow Set me free to find my calling And I'll return to you somehow In the quiet misty morning When the moon has gone to bed When the sparrows stop their singing And the sky is clear and red When the summer's ceased its gleaming When the corn is past its prime When adventure's lost its meaning I'll be homeward bound in time

"Cailín na Gruaige Doinne" is the correct spelling.
@ammulvey7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for comment. You will see it spelled both ways (eg, www.itma.ie/digital-library/sound/cailin-gruaige-doinne-cox/ - the link spells it with an "i", but it's listed on the page as "donne"). The edition I have is quite old and written in the old script prior to modernisation in 1940s (An Caighdeán Oifigiúil). I suspect it's either an older spelling or a dialect issue? I went with the spelling on the Mac an Ultaigh arrangement.

Reply to Edward Palmer. Hello Edward, have you received answers to your questions? 1. There is an article in The Musical Times 54 no. 843 (May 1, 1913) which reviews Hamilton Harty's "A Cradle Song" (same lyrics as Hughes' song) and refers to it as a "lullaby of death." 2. Lines 5-8 (Mavourneen is going...) from the poem by Padraic Colum are found in a stained glass window by Harry Clarke, titled "The Geneva Window," in which he depicts a mother and child and the Virgin Mary in the background. 3. "Mantle of blue" in the lyrics is associated with the Virgin Mary, as historically, she was most often depicted in sacred art in a blue cloak from the eleventh and twelfth centuries onwards. 4. The child is very young- young enough to be rocked to sleep- so, not a soldier. 5. In the lines "Mavourneen is going from me and from you": Mavourneen translates as "my beloved" and refers to the child, who is dying, and therefore "going" from the mother (me and you- the mother is referring to herself and the men from the fields, whom she addresses in the first line). The child is going to heaven, where Mary will receive him in her mantle of blue. 6. He is leaving the "reek of the smoke and cold of the floor", descriptions which suggest a simple rural residence and "the peering of things across the half door" could refer either to livestock or perhaps a sense of the supernatural. A half-door was a feature of rural architecture. 7. Mavourneen can also be a first name, but my understanding is that it is usually a girl's name. 8. I contacted Aine Mulvey in 2016 (hello, Aine!) and she indicated that the interpretation that an individual child has died (as opposed to the birth of the Christ child) and people are paying their respects is common knowledge within Ireland. I hope the additional information is of some use. J.
