I’ve only done longsword for about 6 months now, I’ll be honest I’m not very good at it, but finding exercises like this to do by myself are helpful. I’m training for a fight with my friend who works at medieval times.

I know very little about how to use swords but I was under the impression the longsword is a decent starting weapon for when you first start learning so you can get basic fundamentals that transfer to other types of sword, was that incorrect?

I mean, that's what I do running my school. However, the idea isn't so much that the longsword is the best for lending fundamentals as much as it is about the longsword being the easiest for me to teach in a large group. Once people get the hang of fundamentals with the group lessons, study of other weapons tends to branch out from there.

Sharpened stick cave pupil best an expert master swordsmen 3/4 times easy. Humans used spear/pointy stick for about 1/2 a million years as the primary battle weapon for a reason! If it can take down large game like boar, dear & larger it will have no problem with taking down a human.

I wish I could learn rapier where I live. The only school near me says on their website that they teach mainly longsword and only teach "niche" weapons after months of longsword lessons.
