Neat. Do you need to use very high voltages like you do for macroscopic electrostatic devices? It seems like the voltage can't be that high at that small scale without arcing over.

Hi John, For these experiments, we used 80 V signals and microstepping (see the sequence at the beginning of the video). To answer your question, I have reproduced below some lines from a technical report we prepared at the time. You can of course find much more information in the scientific paper indicated in the description of the video ( dx.doi.org/10.1109/JMEMS.2010.2040139 ). -- The rotational speed is determined by the stepping frequency and by the motor torque. The torque decreases as the speed increases. The motor could be properly operated (without skipping steps) up to a stepping frequency of 5000 steps/s, which corresponds to an angular speed of 0.83 °/ms (see the last sequence of the video). Note that this speed could not be achieved using a half stepping sequence because the torque varies too abruptly in such case. To achieve higher speeds, we used microstepping with ramping signals. The 3-phase voltages were ramped up and down in 16 microsteps.

Thanks for the comment. The CAD file was prepared with Spaceclaim (any other CAD sofware would work), then converted in STEP format to animate it in Blender. Final step for rendering was completed on sketchfab.com . Unfortunatelly, the lawyers from IWC didn't like my work at all (a kind of consecration, although frustrating): they forced sketchfab to delete my file and I just had a few hours to take this screen capture. You can download the CAD file on Grabcad if you wish. I let you find it by yourself (for the reason mentioned above...).

But where the balance gets the energy from ? Hairspring only "balance" the swings, not store the energy.
@cyamahat

Energy comes from the mainspring (right hand side in the giant in-line movement). You can check the originial video (archive.org/details/HowaWatc1949) to get a clear explanation of the working principle.
@krystianstepien5835

Christophe Yamahata but I mean only the part of fork, balance wheel and escape movement. Now I've noticed that the escape wheel push the fork only because of perfect shape of pallet jewel. This is the most important part of the video. The escape wheel has the teeth which slides thru the pallet jewel only because of the perfectly shaped jewel. Tooth pushes the upper pallet jewel which makes the fork swings than the balance wheel moves. Hairspring makes the move stop and than move the balance wheel back. The balance jewel pin pushes the fork which release the escape wheel by the lower pallet jewel. That's it.
