I find that later in the season, they’re not that big a problem. Any blooms that are especially important are covered with large organza bags. You can find them on Amazon

Thank you for sharing your beautiful dahlias❤. What amendments do you add to them.? Where might I be able to purchase the mesh bags you put on your dahlias. Thanks for sharing your garden.
@singingmeadowsfarmАй бұрын
I purchased my organza bags from Amazon. Just make sure to get one large enough to hold the bloom. I’m not certain what Lily uses to feed her plants but in start with a high nitrogen like blood or feather meal in the spring. Then a more balanced fertilizer in July/August at which point in stop feeding to allow the tubers under the ground to get ready for storage.

So beautiful. Thanks so much for bringing us to Liliana’s garden. I wonder how to have these blooms at this time in zone 5, would love to learn more. And her blooms look like there’s no pest damage, what’s her strategy?

Glad you enjoyed the video! This video was shot in October, very end of the season. That’s why there’s so much bloom. Liliana uses organza bags to keep insects off her blooms.

dahlie veramente bellissime! complimenti! anche io ho alcune dalie delle vostre stesse varietà ma i colori differenziano parecchio, vivo a firenze in italia. forse per la differenza di temperatura? molto più alta rispetto alla vostra?
@singingmeadowsfarm2 ай бұрын
This video was filmed in the fall when temperatures were around 15 celcius. This will help with the colours. In the hot sun, the colours will fade.

This was filmed in October. In our area, we plant tubers in the ground in May. The shoots will freeze if temperatures go too low so don’t rush it.

@@singingmeadowsfarm Thanks for letting me know. I am also from Ontario so follow the roughly same protocol as you describe. Dahlias are so lovely, I was hopeful that there might have been a way to start them earlier indoors to obtain abundant blooms sooner! Best wishes.

Omg I love her! I can’t explain why but …it’s just everything! This was actually the most helpful AND enjoyable video I’ve watched while spending this past week learning about dahlias. This is my first year growing them and there’s a lot to learn about, even in just choosing which ones to start. Seeing the whole plant in bloom & hearing her feedback about them was really helpful! Now I just need everyone’s thoughts and prayers that I can avoid root rot and hurricanes while I grow in South Florida summer 😅

I’m not sure of that. They tend to suffer in warmer temperatures. They also don’t like it dry.

I love that you are willing to do some experimentation! I’d like to comment a little from what I’ve learned, but hopefully without interfering with the fun of the experiment. The heat acquired during the day gets lost fast, as you well know, but it’s the soil where you need to retain the heat overnight. What works well for me is to cover my potted plants at night with old sleeping bags which I then remove when the greenhouse is above zero next morning. I opted away from leaves or straw for fear of preventing daytime heat from getting to the soil. For the coldest nights I even warm the bags in the clothes dryer! I didn’t lose a plant last winter, though I did lose sleep :) btw - proximity to the house wall will also work in your favour. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Thanks for this update! It’s nice to view so I can compare my experiences and findings with yours. I’ve pruned everything down now but like you, have had late blooms, and only yesterday did I bring our last bouquet of mums in to adorn our home. My little 6x10 greenhouse being minimally heated at night time costs little so I’m just looking to preserve my root stock now. Glad I made a photo file of the blooms in their glory - made it less sad to cut them down to stalks. Thanks again.

Thanks for this! I guess it was lucky that you got the ‘before frost’ video done in time, and I really appreciate the follow up video after the frost. I had some frost damage here in Hamilton but not as dramatic as yours, thankfully. Was there much damage at your house garden?

No damage at the home garden. I feel like they plot is in another hardiness zone.
